Alright everyone, I have asked these questions in the forums of Gamesworkshop and you know what? They banned it immediately by some MOD who is base-minded. This question I am about to ask is something that keeps bugging me but I would like to know the truth.
The questions is What came first? Tyranids? or the aliens from the movie Aliens Vs. Predator? That's a pretty legit question right? Well the MOD said that I was "accusing" GW of copy-right infringement. The aliens and Tyranids seem pretty similar.....
The other question is What came first? The AT-ST (Starwars Walker) or the Sentinels that the Imperial Guard use? Again these two units are VERY similar in structure.
Another similarity I've seen on other forums is how the Necrons look like the Terminator and the rule with "We'll be Back" is a slight variation of what Arnold says.........
I really hope that the MODS here will allow me my freedom of speech because in the GW forums, you can get branded instantly and noone is allowed to have a proper say. If I had offended anyone who is a major GW supporter than I apologize in advance. I am still a huge fan and buyer of Warhammer 40K products but at the least I still hope that I get my fair say about their products because afterall, the customer is the reason why the company is alive and it is the customers that are the bosses of companies because we keep them in business. Thanks for reading folks.
Unfortunately, the questions you asked could easily be construed by a moderator as needlessly inflammatory (on forums, which tend to be very flammable places, figuratively speaking). To answer your question: Star Wars and Aliens both came first, but even if they hadn't, the Tyranids and IG Sentinals are both quite different from the Xenomorphs / AT-ST Walkers.Originally Posted by Edson
It doesn't really matter what inspired an idea, so long as that idea has taken form.
Or, to quote my favorite English professor: "A good author borrows an idea. A great author takes a good idea, and makes it his own."
The Tyranids are distinctly Warhammer 40k, just as the Zerg are distinctly Starcraft (and the weirdest take on a "Hive Mind" I've ever seen), just as the IG Sentinal is distinctly Imperial Guard.
Eh, try finding an original idea. Aren't many ^_^
Like Poppy (heh) said, it doesn't matter where they came from, we have Tyranids and they are very cool

Oh, just a little interesting sidenote, because forums are private property owned by others, the "freedom of speech" amendment does not apply to them: i.e., Games Workshop has the right to stifle anything they feel is offensive, even if you personally do not believe it to be so.Originally Posted by Edson
A lot of times, it depends on your "implied tone". For instance, by writing "MODS" in all caps above, you come across as accusatory / disrespectful, even if this is not necessarily the case.
well if you have seen the old sentinals, they look nothing like AT St's...
Thats very true, they were quite different. Though the new ones are a blatant take on the AT-ST, though what can you do with a two legged war machine.Originally Posted by Reflex
The truth id that GW has taken all the themes etc they like best, and encorporated them into their own stories. Can you really blame them? The games are written by Sci-fan fans, for Sci-fan fans.
Yep that's about all it comes down to. It's hard to find an original idea these days and it's neither new or surprising that a lot of the things in warhammer look like things in other sci-fi/fantasy worlds.Originally Posted by Will J
Next thing there'll be a thread complaining that warhammer orcs are just a blatant rip-off of Lord of the rings orcs.
Also, I don't really think the aliens from... aliens really look much like Tyranids at all. Now the Zerg, they look like tyranids.
"You challenge me knowing that I am Xiahou Dun!?"
Very true. Starcraft was originally going to be a Warhammer 40,000 game, until Games Workshop pulled their support and denied Blizzard the right to use their licence (we all know how seriously they take giving out licences to their products, and with good reason).Originally Posted by Will J
When Blizzard could no longer make a 40k game, they switched up the story and made the Space Marines the Terrans, the Tyranids the Zerg, and the Eldar the Protoss. We still got a very awesome game, but all the similarities with 40k are due to the fact that it was once slated to be a 40k game, and when it couldn't be any longer, Blizzard basically made a "copy" of the 40k universe and tweaked it enough to make it their own.
wow. I never knew all this. people just like to find similarities , and sometimes that confuses people.
If terrorists ask you "Do you have a bullet through your head?" say proudly, with dignity, "No, I do not. Go fish."
