So, I decided to finally submit to my curiosity and picked up a 40k novel. I rather like the Witchhunters army and the Sisters of Battle, so I picked up Faith & Fire. Or Faith & Flame. Something like that.
Oh my god.
Now, I've been reading the Magic: the Gathering novels for each new expansion for the past couple of years now. I grew up on Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms novels. I am not a novice in the realm of bad game-world fiction. However, sweet holy crap on a stick. I think that book has single-handedly curbed my desire to collect some Sisters of Battle.
So, was Faith & Fire a fairly good book as far as 40k novels go, or is James Swallow just incompetent? To be fair, I couldn't write fiction that well. Fortunately, I have not decided to start a career as an author so I should be pretty safe in flinging a bit of poo.

Black Library seems to have too many amateurs on their payroll.
I don't think that book was that bad. It was ok, but not more than that. There are worse 40k-books I can tell you.
What did you dislike about it?
Oh, and I recommend reading Eisenhorn Trilogy instead, some of the best work released by the BL.
I couldn't agree more. The Eisenhorn Trilogy, alongside the Ravenor series are some truely excellent BL books. They had me completely engrossed, I would highly recommend them. I was also very impressed by the Gaunt's Ghosts series. So, in summary, anything by Dan Abnett Have a read of some of his stuff and see what you think.Originally Posted by Da Mighty Camel
It felt almost like I was reading poorly written (as if there was any other kind) erotica, except that in place of naughty bits they decided to write about blood and violence. The made-up GW words seemed to be a used with a heavy hand as well. It's kindof fun to say Manufactorum once or twice. When I see words like that the third time on a single page, however, it starts to wear a bit thin.Originally Posted by Da Mighty Camel
I've heard good things about Dan Abnett before though. I'll make a point of simply ordering one of his books the next time the need to read something 40k overwhelms me and (hopefully) have a good read. I'm not trusting luck and just picking up something that's in stock at Borders again.

Not going in to that.
Dan Abnett writes really well, an easy match for any of the best fantasy-writers.
You cant request your local library to get some 40k-books then?
Heh, good to hear, as I was pondering whether or not to buy that with Horus Rising (Abnett) the other day at the bookstore... from what I've read so far, Abnett is, like Camel said, the best o.o
Gloria Imperator, The Firstborn Stand!
- 2000pts Inquisition, 2000pts Vostroyans, 3000pts Vampire Counts, 1400pts Daemons, [WIP] 2500pts Death Guard
I havn't got that yet, was going to get it but I aint got enough cash to throw around at the moment. Let me know how good it is if you do get it. If it is anything like Abnett's other work for BL then it'll be a damned good read.Originally Posted by The Salmon Thief
Faith and Fire isn't the best novel in the world, but it is far better than either blood angel novel Swallow wrote. Personally loved the one comment they had about marine librarians in the beggining...
rp252, if you loved the first two Ravenor novels then I'm sure that like several (myself included) you can't wait for Ravenor Rogue to come out.
