I thought I would share you all my personal experience with purchasing from Forge-World.
I place my first order for FW products some 6 weeks ago for a value of over 700 USD. ( this is not an unreasonable amount). After being informed that it would be expressed shipped and with me in 10 days it was not until....
Yesterday that I received.. Part of my order and was informed one of the major items was on back order..( A super heavy tank)
I called (telephoned) only to be told that it would be another 2 weeks at least before it would be shipped..I received no notification of this prior to part shipment of my order..My reaction would have been refund my credit card and ship to me the WHOLE order at once.. I feel that they took my money and looked after me like a mushroom ( kept in the dark and given BS to eat) I have e mail, a fax, telephone & pager and they could not inform me? they debited my credit card same day!
I had to call them from the US (at my cost again) as I had items missing from the sprues and in fact some parts that are missing will not allow me to complete the models in question.
As for the packaging... I thought this was about average, but more supportive material could have been placed inside to stop movement of said items.(this would stop items from comming off the the sprues..
There was a fair amount of flashing, and the items were crammed into small plastic zip lock type bags with a sticker of the product code.. furthermore the pictures of items on their Web-site do match what you get..(they should state this!) .. I feel a bit deceived as it was the pictures that encouraged me to purchase..The instructions to complete the models are marginal at best and require a fair amount of thought as to process's involved .. I know they state that they are for the experienced modeller but a poor photocopy of the completed model does not constitue instruction
We pay a preimium for FW items and in short I feel that they do not qualify nor do they justify the pricing
I can't say I have ever had a problem with forgeworld, mind you I have only ever bought the special Dark Angel doors etc for a rhino and they turned up very quickly and were fine.
Helper monkey, bring me beer and donuts
ive never been able to justify the price of forgeworld products.
you basically pay bmw prices for a product with the fit and finish of a kia, it makes no sense.
your telling me a 10.5 tall resin model that has to be put together and painted is worth over 500 bucks? (warhound titan) the cost to produce that thing is ridiculously low. maybe if it was sent in a felt lined cherrywood case with a leather binder containing full color high quality directions it MIGHT be worth 500 bucks. but instead it comes in plastic bags with a photocopy of the model for directions lol.
and come on, 80-100 bucks for a book? a book that you cant even use in a tournament for that fact.
20 bucks for 3 doors that you glue on a rhino? the rhino itself is only worth 20 bucks.
it just boggles my mind that people buy that stuff. they obviously have more dispensable income then i do, either that or they have issues with there financial priorities.
i could afford forgeworld stuff if i wanted to, but id have to make triple what i do to just throw away that kind of money. totally not worth the cost imo.
leave the moderating to the moderators
if pro is the opposite of con, does that mean progress is the opposite of congress?
Yeah, the prices are what bug me. I'd love to have the newest Imperial Armour that covers all the Tau stuff, and some of the flyers, but I can't without spending about $700 (and $100 alone for the book), and I don't have that money to spend =[
You have to wonder what the markup on that stuff must be. I could understand if it was all hand-moulded or something, but they obviously just cast the models like the rest of GW's products, and apparently give you less than good packaging. For about twice as much.
They did send me a free 2006 catalougue, though, that was cool o_0

Forgeworld do produce very highly detailed and large models and therefore probably do not sell a great deal of volume. The high cost of the models is representative of the cost of sculpting the original models and making the mould etcs. As I said before I bought some small stuff from them and it was great, it made a command vehicle stand out from the others and that is what I was paying for.

Nobody forces you to buy FW products, you can see the prices before ordering, so if you don't like them or feel you cannot afford them, it is quite easy not to order. If you have a legitimate complaint as the OP does, then it is very fair to complain as your order has not been honoured, but whinging about the prices is just silly. Yes, they charge that much for a book and that much for a resin model, it is their right, if you don't like it don't buy it. Maybe I should go into a TVR dealership and start yelling "lolz, you're charging that much for a car without hydraulic steering?!?!"
Let me state from the get-go that I am a HUGE fan of Forgeworld products. The pieces they make are high quality sculpts, they fill a niche, and the customer service has always been good within certain parameters.
Let me continue by saying tht I am NOT a huge fan of their (a) prices (b) packaging (c) lack of a toll free number.
For most items, their plastic bag method is fine. I have a vindicator conversion kit & it's in a plastic bag... and that is fine. There are no delicate pieces there to worry about. Same for the various doors and other things I have.
Where prices are concerned... I totally get it. I don't LIKE it, but I understand.
If that Warhound titan was HALF of its current price, would you buy one? I would. I'd buy two. That's the problem. GW wants you to love the stuff. They want people to buy the stuff... They don't want EVERYONE buying it, though. They want Titans & Baneblades & Thunderhawks to be rare. They want you to see someone at an RT with a fabulously painted Ang'R'Rath (sp?) and say, "Dang! That's awesome! I need to get one!" They don't want you to go... "Oh. Hey. You got the Forgeworld Greater Daemon of Khorne. That's cool. Yeah, I have 4. Once I get 4 more, I'm gonna use them to proxy a unit of Bloodletters to freak out my opponents."
THAT is why they are so expensive. FW products are "elite" and are priced to stay that way. That's why you can't get them anywhere else (almost).
They don't sell them wholesale that I know of.
As far as all the extra flash... I'd have to know your specific pieces to know how to respond. My door kits have little "nubs" on them where the resin was poured into the molds (easily cleaned - no harder than snipping a piece off of a sprue), the Vindicator kit & most other stuff has no more flash than a GW model, my roads had a LOT of flash but cleaned remarkably easy, and my =I= purity seals are LOADED with flash... but that is due to the way they're made... and it cleans off with your bare hands (mostly) and a SMALL bit of help from a file or knife.
Now, I know I just listed a bunch of FW products that I own. Truth is, I might own more than a lot of gamers... but less than a lot, too. Thing is, I have bought exactly THREE sets of Raptor Rhino doors from FW... and that was only because it was bunched in with someone elses larger order to take advantage of free shipping... The rest I got for discounted prices or trades on bartertown (www.bartertown.com). Some were as little as half price. I'm no GW or FW fanboy. <G>
Now, where the instructions are concerned... you're spot-on. Assembly instructions SHOULD be better. Whether or not they're marketed as for experienced modellers only, they should come with proper assembly guides.
MY guess about your missing pieces is that they will arrive in a timely fashion. I've heard numerous reports about people having parts missing & FW sent them the missing pieces (and in most cases a bit more) in swift order.
Good luck with it.
Blue Table Painting
--Miniatures painting service. High quality, good prices, and quick turnaround.
I've bought a limited amount of stuff from FW in the past and have always been very happy with the pieces that I received. I recently ordered the Red Scorpions stuff and was less than thrilled. There were no problems with Culln or the extra pads but the two squad upgrade packs had lots of problems (missing pieces, holes in pieces). To try and avoid a trans-Atlantic phone call I tried to resolve the issue by email but got no results. I finally called them this morning and they were very apologetic about both the problems with the parts and the email issues. I was told that my replacement parts will be in the mail today. We then had a brief talk about the upcoming Death Corps of Krieg figures that should start appearing in September.
All in all, I don't have a problem with them. Hate the prices? Oh, yeah. The quality of the parts has always been above average (until now) which I expect for the price I'm paying. It wasn't up to snuff this time but, they offered to fix it immediately. I can't fault them for their customer service.
I can't afford to buy a lot of their stuff but I do add the occasional pieces. I've got a little of the Tyranid stuff and think I'll get the new Carnifex upgrades in the near future. I'm slowly working on a LatD force with the Red Scorpions stuff as the core units. As soon as the Death Corps figures are available, I'll be picking them up to go into this force as well. I'm toying with the idea of the Sonic Dreadnought and Greater Daemon of Slaanesh for my Emperors Children but that's a huge amount of cash and I've got doubts that my wife will buy into all of this.
Yes, there are female marines and my Sunhawks will let you know in a major way.
Not all the Emperors Children turned coat. We will redeem our name.
Oh my, well I got an elysian army from FW, my experiances are very possitive, sure there is an issue with flash, and sure their prices are large, but the models are beautiful and when I have had issues with orders, they have corrected them immediatley, in some cases they sent me the wrong thin, I phoned them and they immedialey dispatched the right thing (notably I ordered the elysian equipment pack and they sent the weapon pack, I phoned and they sent the equipment pack, leaving me with a spare weapon pack - at this point I was considering telling them they sent me a valkyrie instead of a vulture )
But as others have said, if you dont like them, dont do it, your choice, if no one used them, they would vanish
Everything you have been told is a lie!
Chaps and Chapette's
I have to admit that once I contacted FW they were "exceptional" and gave me the feel good factor.. to the point I am about to place another order with them. Maybe it was a bad day in the office for them...
