I was wondering what everyone thought about which race is the most danger to the Imperium of man. There are alien races such as Eldar (dark n craftworld) tyraninds, necrons, orks, tau, and chaos. Out of all of these, which has the potential to destroy humanity? Why?
There have been loads of topics about these, but it's always interesting.
I think it's Orks.
They're the most resilient race as far as climate is concerned, and seem to have unlimited knowledge as far as technology goes, as the Meks just bung together two paper clips and an elastic band to make a dooms-day device.
I think they'll be the fall of the Imperium because they're so everlasting. If Orks never had the urge to fight each other, the Imperium wouldn't exist.
I agree, I mean, they are warp resistant, they can literally make anything work and the bigger the gun you use against them, the bigger the gun they strike back with. They basicly regenerate at an alarming rate, one of them can populate a planet in no time and they have the numbers to take on pretty much everyone else if they get together.Originally Posted by Robizzle
Course, there are some more immidiate threats in the meantime. The tyranid have a fair chance at crippling the imperium if they strike key worlds, but it's something i doubt they could be able to do in an organised fashion. Chaos can be devastating, but like it or not they are still human and thus have the fundemental weaknesses of humans. A regular choas marine is no stronger than a loyalist marine, so they could fight a war of mutual self extinction without a victor easily enough. The only reason chaos has never been beaten back harder than after the horus heresy is that the imperium is fighting on too many fronts and so can't allocate the required resources the fight each threat.
Eldar can be a pain but can hardly cripple the imperium in any way shape or form in my opinion. The 'cron also lack the coordination to instantly cripple the imps and the Tau simply aren't strong enough to take them all down.
These are just my opinions though, so take them as you will.

Really it should be necrons, they represent the most unifed race with a huge technology advantage and there are possibly billions of them.
They can easily play hit and run and the Imperium would never be able to bring its vast resources against them.
Since they don't do massive assaults they could rip the imperium apart piecemeal (destroying key planets, destroying spaceports etc).
Also they don't need to worry about being pinned down due to their ability to phase.
I think it is first tyranids then second necrons. Orks yes if they ever united would be a major threat but I don't think any of us will ever see that happening (they just like fighting too much so end up fighting each other). The reason I think tyranids is they seem to be able to attack on different areas of the Imperium as they attacked from the eastern plane first then on the lower half so they actually may have the entire galaxy surronded at the moment and are only testing the Imperiums strength.
Not to mention the tyranids are always evolving so in the end in a war of attrition against the nids the Imperium will lose as they so far seem to be a never ending tide at the moment and the codex even hints that this is only the tip of the iceburg. Plus with their tactics of completely destoying worlds not even orks can survive against them forever and once a planet is infected with nids it is almost impossible to be rid of them forever. Genestealers can probally infect every single planet in the imperium and all they need is time which is on their side.
Now necrons are the only other threat to the nids since both are still tricking in but really it will be a battle in the end I think between the aswome physical realm of the C'tan vs. the almost limitless physic power of the hive mind and who gets to eat the galaxy.
Is it me or does any other necron player get annoyed when they see people saying "Necrons eat souls". How is that even possible as souls are part of the warp and necrons want nothing to do with it? Eh probaly me just me being picky.

Orks I would say are the first. They learn how to cooperate, then no one is going to have fun, except them. I wouldn't say Eldar at all because they sometimes team up with humans, and why would they just bite the hand that feeds them (figurativily).
The Imperium is the biggest threat to the Imperium. While there is something to stand against, the Imperium will fight hard, whether it is Orcs, Eldar, or belching frogs, the Imperium will unite and work to destroy the "foe". But what happens when a planet goes and swaps sides? or how about a region? a segmenta? That is when the Imperium is in civil war, and nothing is deadlier or more dangerous to unity than that.

The only thing the imperium has to fear is fear itself...
To dispise is desposition itself....
To hate is hatred itself....
(Come to think of it, most verbs can do that.)
If terrorists ask you "Do you have a bullet through your head?" say proudly, with dignity, "No, I do not. Go fish."

For me personally, I see the tyranids as the single biggest threat to humanity. If one reads all the history about the 'nids (a bunch o background in their codex) he will find that, though there have only been three or four major incursions of hive fleets, they have cost the Imperium a whole lot of worlds n materials, and I mean a whole lot. With other planets, when they are taken over by other aliens or such, they can be retaken. With the 'nids, they leave an airless rock, meaning that there is no way to reclaim a once prosperous world. Also, the number of how many 'nids there acually are is questionable, but it could even be (I think) in the trillions. The Imperium is just begining to see the might of the tyranid hive mind.
I would agree, orks are a big threat, but they have one major flaw.....they fight amoung themselves as much as they do others. If the entire race came together in one extremely-huge Waarrrgh, then thats the end of most other races in the galaxy. However, orks can be defeated (though there will always be some left, meaning no world that is invaded by orks is ever free of their alien taint) and though there is the occasional Waarrrgh, they can be contained.
Necrons (if there really are billions of them) are a big threat as well, but, at the moment, they dont seem to be universally coordinated. If they do become coordinated, its a tossup (in my opinion) on which is the bigger threat; the 'nids or necrons.
I'm with mpdscott in theory...
I don't think the Imperium's biggest threat is the "Imperium" I think it is mankind as a race... for all the reasons he said and more.
Their (our) greed will always be their downfall. They will destroy other races with efficiency and each other with prejudice & hatred.
Remember your fluff & novels here, people... In most 40K books, there are humans killing other humans... Even if it is so simple as a commisar enacting some harsh discipline..
Now, for "human," I'm also referring to Space Marines. Take Grey Knights, for example... If the inquisition ever decides that the Space Wolves need to be destroyed for all of their mutations (face it, folks... they're mutated as all get out... even for a Space marine), the GK's will be there with bells on.
Mankind will destroy itself before any other race gets around to is...
...of course, the discussion really is moot, as any time you have a game like this, there will be people who want to play regular humans. GW would never kill them off.
