Hi, i just signed up though i could fine help here. I am stuck between SM and Tau, i have played before but just wtih my broter, i though there was a rule where if u rolled three 6's in a row you could blow up a tank. So i have played and know the general rules. So i am trying to decide between Tau or SM.
Hey mattman, welcome to LO.
There is no "three 6s to blow up a tank" rule, it depends what weapon you are firing at the tank. If it was a boltgun at a land raider for example, the 2nd 6 (the armour penetration roll) would not even penetrate the armour, so there would be no further rolls. If the weapon was different, for example a lascannon, then the three 6s would indeed destroy the tank. There are plenty of extra rules to take into consideration with this however, so read through the vehicle rules in the 40K rulebook again to get a clearer idea of what to do.
Between SM and Tau you say... Well, my advice is go with the army you think looks best. You can go for the army you prefer tactically (if you intend to do alot of competitive play), but I am of the opinion that you should go for the army that looks best and has the most interesting fluff. I went with SM for my first army because I thought at the time they were cool (I was only 12 bless me!). I still think they look cool, and they are easy to assemble and paint in comparision to many other armies so are ideal if you are just starting out. I havn't ever collected Tau, so I am unable to comment on what they are like to assemble and paint, but they also look pretty good IMO.
My advice to you would be have a look at each armies codex, read some fluff about each and then go with the force you find the most appealing. Both armies function quite differently; the Tau are the kings of mobile firepower, whilst the SM are all rounders who are pretty good at most things.
Hope this helps a little mate, best of luck with your army whichever you choose.
