OK, I play marines, and I name all my models. I write their names on the bases, and some of the models are fashioned after other people/characters of the same name (For example, I have Sean Connery and M. Bison in my army). I think it makes it easier to tell them apart easily, but all my friends think I'm insane or something.
Anyone else do this, or have an opinion on this?
Not insane... jez insane goes around alot these days.
No I think it's cool and good! I like it, altough I don't do it myself:
1. I haven't even painted 1/5 of my IG army
2. ITS AN IG ARMY... naming 600troops are gonna be a pain! And i would have to use surnames.

Back when I bought my first tactical squad I named all of them, but then as I got more guys I found it extremely hard to think up cool names for marines.

"I read about something like this in a book." "Are you sure it was a book? Are you sure it wasn't nothing?" "...Oh yeah."-Peter and Brian Griffin
I think it's great that you enjoy your army enough to start naming them. Maybe your friends are only objecting to using the names of celebrities and video game characters?
Insane would be first naming all your guys and then making casualty models of them so you can see the carnage develop as the game progresses.
Out of curiosity, what weapon did you give Sean Connery?
"My tanks have names, my men have numbers." -Col. Edmund Grahvess, 23rd Kronecker Prison Guard
I name my commanders
I have named all my Grey Knights, and the main characters, as it adds a lot to the feel of
the Force for me, and makes it personal.
I name characters, and squad sergents.
Equipped with the latest XV25 Stealth Armour these troops are the 'love wolves' of the Tau army, operating independently of other formations.

All of my Grey Knights are named. It adds flavor. This way I can see which Justicar and squad does the best.
Why use science and education when ignorance and superstition will work just as well.
I at least name my important characters. Even though they aren't Squad Leaders all my (40k) Chaos Chosen have names. It makes writing fluff and backgrounds for your army easier and more rewarding as you document their successes.
I seem to recall LordofChange giving every single model in his Tyranid army names, each different type having stereotypical names for various countries. That was rather odd. Especially the German Genestealers.
