Hi, I was just getting started with WHFB and i was wondering what would be the cheapest 2000 pt army(in US dollars). I have like 100 dollars to spend i might get 50 more but i want to go in the store and buy a 2000pt army(mainly because the store is far away and cant get there more then once a month). I like all armies besides Ogres and Orcs. I would use any playing style. Just want to start playing the game and the only games we play out here are 2000 plus.
I'm not sure if you'll be able to afford a 2000 point army even for $150.
For most "elite" armies, you're looking at 10-15 points per infantry figure & 25 points
per cavalry figure.
For 2K points with 500 points in characters, your looking at 80-odd inf and 20 cav.
Thats 7 boxes of plastic figures (+ whatever character models you buy). Not sure
how much plastic boxes are where you are, but they're £18 each here.
Plus you really need to get the army book. I reckon you'll need to buy
7 boxes of plastic figures, half a dozen blister packs (for heroes, special units
you can't convert. mages, etc) + probably 1 "big" figure (chariot, monster, etc).
Thats around £175 - which is $300.
That said, assuming you do build an army with as few figures as possible, and as many
plastic ones as possible, I reckon your best bet is either
1) Brettonians. Knights are quite expensive (points wise) and you get 8 per box.
You can proxy normal knights for almost any knight in the army.
2) Chaos. If you use lots of chaos warriors and use empire knights (suitably coverted)
you'd have a fairly cheap force. Once you got some more cash you could add
other forces to it.
3) Vampire Counts - Blood dragon Converted empire/brettonian/high elf knights as black knights. Plastic skeletons (use the armoured ones as grave guard). If you use the list
from the back of the book you can use skeleton bowmen.
4) High Elves. There's lots of plastic sets for these, and you can spend lots of points on
magic, etc that will use up points without you having to buy extra figures.
Armies to avoid (because they are horde armies or require lots of metal figures)
Skaven (too many figures!)
Hope this helps.
like spon said i dont think you can get to 2k points with 150$. BUT you can get to atleast 1k if not 1.5k with some armies.
Chaos is my personal suggestion for fun. i love chaos but it isnt that easy to buy. they dont have a batallion box, so it will be a little more expensive to buy. if you stick to warriors, knights, chariot or two, a hero. you will still be looking at about 200$ for about 1k to 1.5k
Dwarfs are probably your best bet for the money you have. with the battle for skull pass comming out you can get about 500pts to600pts very cheeply if you buy just the dwarf sprues on ebay or something. or buy the skull pass and try to sell the gobbos (you will also get the rule book too) the batalion boc will run you 90. with about another 500 to 600pts. throw in another warmachine, a unit, or some slayers and you'll probably be about about 1.5k points for just about 150$
Try Chaos if you want a cheap small elite army, but you can probably only make an 1000pt army with 100$ even with the smallest and cheapest army.
You could also cheack E-bay or something similar, there are often cheap army´s.
Or you could start with an 500/750/1000pt army and try some models before u buy them, this way you can make an army over time and get realy in it/change it to your playstyle

in the last issue of WD (pre eldar one) in the bitz and pieces section they parted out what they would include in a battalion box for the armies that dont have one.
chaos was the cheapest at 185$ for 2 units of 18 chaos warriors with command, 5 chaos knights, and 1 chaos warrior chariot, this equaled up to 935 points.
the other 2 armies, DE and VC, were 205, VC cranked out 964 pts, and DE only 717.
another option would be ogres, their battalion box puts out 670 pts without upgrades, you get 6 bulls, 24 gnoblars, 4 leadbelches are 4 iron guts. that would leave you 60$ or so to get another box or 2 of models, or a box and some form of character, i wouldnt spend the 35-40ish on an actual tyrant/bruiser/butcher model, id either fork out the 20 bones for a maneater and use him or try to make one up with a spare ogre model and left over bitz. you can buy/mail order a maneater model and would make a nice Hero lvl imo, theres a pirate one, a ninja one, a female ogre with beard and rolling pin, etc.
I do believe GW was holding a special sale for Skull Pass:
But one Skull Pass + a Battallion of your choice and get a Gobbo Fanatic free.
Buy the Skull Pass and the Dwaf Battallion, sell all your Gobbos, and use that money to buy more Dwaves. As a bonus, it's online, your you don't even need to leave the house.

My 2000pt army has about 4 models in it... Nah, not quite, but the models are very expensive points wise.
