Ive just moved to southampton (uni) and was just wondering what people thought of hobbying on the south coast.
1.GW Soton - What is it like? Where is it? Is it big? Do they do SP?
2.Other hobby shops - Are there any? What are they like? Are they useful for buying modelling stuff and paints?
3.Gamers - Are there any gaming clubs in Soton? Are there any members of LO in Soton?
Cheers for your responses, I know the games of GW but Ive never had the money to build a full force and paint them. Now I have an £1850 overdraft I was wondering how I could get back into GW again. Im thinking of starting a Lizardmen force (see my 2000 army list) and have also created (on paper) and Inquisitor warband (see the concave and SP forums)
Both myself and Silver Wings currently study at Southampton uni (that I know of).
Although tbh I don't really game anymore, so you won't find me in the local GW.
I'm pretty sure they run a games night every thursday though, and the staff seem very friendly.
Games Night is on a Thursday, though I havent been yet.
I left my armies back at home (DA/IG) and might pick them up over Christmas. I was also going to start Lizardmen for Fantasy, but starting from scratch is a scary proposition and I dont know if my painting is up to it.
Cya down there sometime maybe.
Also note Bullet Magnet is a LO Sotonian, though he's a bit of an LO and hobby newbie.
Every time you read this sig: a fairie dies!
Thanks for that, Wings.<_<
However, he speaks the truth.
I seem to be having tremedous difficulty with my lifestyle.
Death to our enemies! And, time permitting, our allies as well.
I've only ever been in there in passing, but the staff are friendly.
It's a medium sized store(no special gaming room).
And yes Thursday's the day.
Try it out and see.
As for the other stuff, I've only been to Sot'on in passing so I couldn't say. I think there is a Beaties somewhere and they sell modelling stuff.
Oh wait I just remembered...
Go down the road towards Debenhams away from GW and there is a Forbidden planet for your comic book needs and then two shops down there is a shop of which I forget the name, that specialises in roleplaying games and sell some models and stuff too. Check it out!

Cervantes: In order to attain the impossible, one must attempt the absurd.
Well I agree with the fact the staff are friendly.
Other stores? Hmmm Portsmouth-never been there-
-Salisbury is a quick journey on train from Soton-staff friendly, similar size to Southampton store, a few good restaraunts in the town centre in case you feel hungry after a game!-
I have been in Forbidden Planet
But other store never heard off so no enlightenment further!

To be honest i've had mixed experiences with GW Soton.
I've had rants about them on here before so i'll avoid rehashing it all again but get advice on here first about your purchases- don't be pushed into buying anything that you're unsure about.
I remember a guy called Craig in their being friendly and helpful.
I think the Uni has (had) a gaming group. Never played at GW myself but thursday night is indeed "Veterans night".
Southamton has alot of gamers but most exist in cells playing amongst themselves. (i play in a lil group of 6 of us round each others houses. Beer and friends being the priority rather than tourny play)
We used to have a great store called hidden fortress where all gamers were welcome but sadly it is no more.
Feel free to PM if you need any Soton info,
Bleed Black Label S.D.M.F's!!
My GF is in southampton though I'm oxfordshire based so like Angry Angels only in passing but I've found them to be highly helpful
Southampton's a pretty good store, nice friendly staff, usually an OK group of people in there too, although since I don't live there I haven't been able to go to the game nights so I have no idea how good they are. Portsmouth is pretty close and the staff there is also decent, been to 5 Games Day's via coach from there and been fine with the people every time. Winchester is my local store and is extremely small but has a gaming night every thursday which I also haven't been to because I'm busy that day . Not many people work there it seems and there's usually only a single staff member and a couple customers in there at a time, plus its closed on tuesdays and wednesdays, which is somewhat irritating. Don't think theres any other stores close to there though, although both Portsmouth and Winchester are pretty close via train so if you ever feel the need to visit or somehow get annoyed with the Southampton staff, it's not too hard =P.
No-one else noticed this was from 2006? Still a valid comment, though... so with that in mind- GW Soton was my first GW store for purchasing and as a red-shirt! I think some of the same staff are still there. I can't comment on gmaing but there certainly used to be some quality painters on the staff and were always good to learn from.
No more NG spearmen, thanks! Now I need some pump-wagons!
