So, I am currently deployed to Kuwait in support of OIF. I've played D&D and MTG for a long time, but never got into any Miniature games. Well, one of the good friends I met here happens to play 40k and fantasy.
After seeing his army (which he brought with him), hearing about all the tactics, and realizing I can create/paint my own army...I have since ordered the Rulebooks and Codexes for Wood Elves and Eldar, which will be my respective armies.
I have seen that these two armies tend to not be too noob friendly, but I look forward to learning, collecting, and painting. I recently purchased a fairly large WE army off of ebay for around $230, and will be getting my Eldar soon, even though I really have no place to store any of these things in my tent.
I intend to have at least one army painted in a few months, and play some games before our tour ends. Disposable income + no bills = lot's o minis
Welcome to the hobby! And more importantly, thanks for all you are doing over there. I wish you the best of luck.
While its true the armies you have chosen are no the easiest to begin with, the most important thing in choosing a force is choosing armies you enjoy. When I started Warhammer, Dwarfs were one of the hardest armies to win with. I dont think I ever saw them even win a battle report in White Dwarf and most people scoffed at them around me. But I liked Dwarfs, plain and simple. Now they are considered one of the more powerful armies, but thats not what kept me with them. Its just the fact I like everything Dwarf.
Stick with it, enjoy the time you spend painting and scheming with the armies you like, and Im sure youll do fine. Its not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game. And I think you will find, that while challenging, your army choices are really quite exceptional once you get the hang of them. I have a soft spot for Wood Elves. My dear friend who also served near you played them. For him, there was never any challenge picking them up. He just seemed to know what to do with them, and he trashed every opponent I ever saw him play, including me hundreds of times.
i started with 5th ed woodies, and you are right that they arent the easiest armny to use, but the are so fun. They play very diffeently to other armies, so you will have fun.
Dude, seriously, that has got to be the BEST reason to join the military... disposable income, no bills, = LOTS of money to buy Warhammer...
Sadly I'm not even joking. Here in Canada you can make like $40,000 for a single 6-months tour. Send a couple grand a month back to the fam to pay the bills and keep the rest... O_o
Oh, yeah, and remember, while you're over there... keep your head down, and blood for the blood god!
(Now if next week I hear on the news about a soldier stationed in Kuwait who goes ape**** and starts running through the streets taking skulls for the throne of Khorne I'm going to feel very bad.)

That depends on who he kills, mind you. If he goes off and kills horrid people who were intending to kill him and the rest of his group then it would be fine as long as he doesn't die while doing it.
