Kinda a basic question, I've heard the word used pretty frequently but I can't pin down a solid definition. I assume its some kind of open area that you can shoot guys in but what specifically are people talking about?
From my experience it is often for IG. It is basically lanes where, if a unit goes into, it can get shot at. A good example of this is Guardsmen or Conscripts spread out in a long time. This way, wherever the enemy move they are able to be shot at.

Nothing more complicated than that, though you can make alot out of them with split deployment and other clever tactics.
Every time you read this sig: a fairie dies!
Thats basically what I just said >_<
Is it like, usually a space parallel to your deployment that troops have to move across, or diagonal area that's blocked off from your opponents deployment but who's LOS covers the approach to your deployment, or something else?
Maybe its perpindicular and reaches from your edge to his? Maybe its all of em?
Draw a straight line from "you" to "enemy", that's a firelane. It is a limited avenue of approach that the enemy cannot take without receiving fire from your guys. Now, it remains a firelane whether or not you actually have troops using it, but that is its purpose. Most of the time, if you have all your firelanes covered with your deployment, any enemy trying to get close will have a bad day. Some are bigger then others, but they're all basically choke points (hense them being called lanes, like lanes in a road).
Its also a line that you keep your own units out of while advancing. Essentially your support fire goes down the firing lane to either kill your enemy or deny them access to tactically important areas of the board.
