OK well ive super new here....i would like to make this strait and to the point...ok right now i am in the process of moving to london from the US(dont like it there), well i want to get into table topping now that im going to the UK(home of warhammer...etc) and also cause im a little older now and now have the funds for armies etc. I knew about table top game awhile ago but like i said, lack of funds...there was no scene where i lived etc...so i never learned how to play, owned and army etc.(dam whats with all these "etc.") bottom line now i do and i have a big qeustion before i can do anything else....what i want to know is what is the most widely played/biggest scene/most popular game being played in the UK right now weither it be 40k or fantasy or maybe something else....(im guessing its between 40k and F...so please as soon as possible please let me know...(i need to know cuase i am still in the US and i want to by the respective games rule book before i leave so i can read it on the plane)
also as a side note... would 500 USD be anough money to start a decent(welly playable) sized army....
thanks again...sorry for the noobness its just realy important
recently i have been joining other warhammer forums/communities and have learned that
40k is the more popular game, with superior background and depth.
Fantasy is the superior game, with greater and more tactical game mechanics.
is this true and can you explain more indepthly

That's a roughly true assessment. Really, both games are quite popular and in London you shouldn't have any problem getting a game of either one. Base your decision on what you are more interrested in, what models you like. What gets your blood pumping more? The Lord of the Rings movies or Starship Troopers? This is certainly oversimplifying, but i'm sure you get the idea.
And yes, $500 will buy you a fine starting force for either game. Good luck on the move!
ok thanks you for your reply..it was very helpful and defenatly gave me more convidence in what i was thinking aswell...also thanks for giving my luck for the move...i will need all i can get
$500 is a very nice ammount to start an army with really. Once you pick one theres penty of forums for each one.You are probably bound to get a game,it is the home of warhammer ect.
Most games are enjoyable, just depends on what you like and style,do you like fantasy with dwarves, knights, orcs and goblins, high elves, wood elves, lizardmen army or do you like the sc-fi futureistic army like space marines, imperial guard, tau, necrons, and eldar?
One thing I will say about London though, it's big, and it can be quite impersonal, so don't expect to just bump into other gamers randomly. My bet would be to try and find your nearest store (the one at the Plaza shopping mall in Oxford Street is nice.. the guys there are pretty friendly) and talk to the staff.. They might know of some gaming clubs in the area you live in, and at worst, you can always bring your army to the store on the right night and play games there. That said, I wouldn't advise taking your army on the tube or anything, so if you're going to be living outside zone 1, it might be tricky. I'm sure you'll find something though.
I don't tend to play in London, as my room is too small to store my army and painting gear, and I always have too much work to do anyway, otherwise I'd happily recommend something more specific.
Ooh.. If you're going to be at uni, you might want to try and find out if they have a gamesoc. They tend to be a hub for gamer/geeky types. ;P
On the 40k/fantasy divide.. I have to say 40k is more popular, however, it's never hard to find a game of fantasy. Don't rule out the specialist games as well.. Many medium/large sized stores will have a weekly evening dedicated to them.

This is very true.Originally Posted by The_Giant_Mantis

I'm very unlucky in that my closest stores are the ones in central.
I very rarely play there, but about a year or so ago, I used to go up every few weeks, and never had any real problems carrying my stuff on 30 minute bus rides etc.
Otherwise, I'm pretty much in accord with T_G_M, he speaks the truth, even if it is only occasionally

thanks every one, especialy T_G_M, and mius-t. I total understand what you are saying about londoners and bring impersonable and just so you know i wont be anywhere close to zone 1. Actually i will be in zone 6 right out of northwood station(moving in with my father), so either riding the tube one stop to either watford or harrow wouldnt be to bad...but what i would most likey do is just drive or take a bus either way its only 5 miles. As a side note has anyone ever been up there, to the harrow or watford stores??(or anywhere around there) Also unfortunatly i am not going to the uni but am still in high school. anyways i am having a super hard time figering out what i want to play since i love both equaly...i love sci-fi, love fantasy i dont know what to do if you guess have any suggestions please let me know cuase i need to figure this out as soon as possible because i want to go and purchase the rulebook so i can read it on the flight..thanks
I'd say 40k,simplier I think in my opinion, rules wise, and some pretty simple armies to start out with(most of the time anyway).Or just pick one get into it a bit,and go to your local store and read the other book if you can/get it.
