As the title states I an new to Warhammer Fantasy and I need help in choosing what army I should play. I want something well rounded, abit of shooting, nice hand to hand, and mobility. Any Suggestions?
Have you tried searching the forums for posts similar to what you want? There are constant posts from new people asking about what army they should choose and usually there a few people who reply.
An army that fits all but one of your criteria are Dwarves - They have probably the best shooting, they have some really solid CC units but they are not mobile in the slightest.
My Arena Champions: Kharn'eth The Bloodcleaver and Gorzag Iron Jaw
Orc and goblin could work too, they got lot of shoot(not the best one, but it is shoot), they got good melee, fast mobility(waaaaghh), and nice magics !
Well, it depends on how much of a bit of everything you wanna have, and by adding some Dogs of War you can always mitigate the weaknesses of your Army (unless Bretonia or a demon-led Chaos Horde)
Though the best all-rounder might be the Empire: decent cavalry, ranged combat from archers to handgunners, awhole set of artillery to choose from, and versatile magic since you choose from all eight basic lores.
Their only drawback would be that as humans they only have average stats, but that's not too problematic.
yeah, i the hell could i forgot the empire !! o.O
Any army can beat any army, and all are equally good IMO.
The difference comes with the 'pick up and play' factor.
When I first started I started with a friend. I chose lizardmen and he chose Khemri. Now khemri are one of the hardest armies to master in WH (i reckon) and lizardmen are quite forgiving, so I would usually end up the Victor in our early games, despite the fact we were both absolute crap!
Now I hate playing against them as they are a real pain to beat, our battles usually go 50/50 now.
Choosing an army which requires a certain finesse will ultimately make you a better player I think. All of the elf armies require this, as do Khemri, and others to a varying degree.
Dwarfs are probably the easiest army to play. High leadership, high toughness, good armour and one helluva shooting phase! Bretonnians are pretty straight forward too.
Of course it all boils down to how you play them.
If you want the most rounded army then I would go for either Empire or Orcs and Goblins, both of whom can be strong in each of the four phases.
Good luck! =)
I would say lizardmen as they are good at everything you talked about. they are better fighters than orcs, have more magic than everybody else, are pretty fast( skinks are very fast at M6) and can shoot pretty well (skinks Have Poisoned rapid firing blowpipes)

Ogres are an easy army for begginers to play but very hard to master. They are about as suttle as a brick but with M6 and S4 T4 three attacks they can really make a mess of things.
My advice is to go and watch some games at your local store. If you get to know some of the people, if you don't already, they might let you use their army for a sample game.
Then look through the army books, either from other players or at a store, to get an idea of what they do.
I think new players need to think in terms of the game phases, which it seems you're already doing. How important is each individual phase to you: moving, magic, shooting, and combat? Then figure out which army matches that most closely for you.
