My local Warhammer 40k group is only 6 players large. We have a serious problem with our newest player, he only wants to play to win. Now I understand that some people really enjoy playing this way, but us 5 other members don't! We have politely hinted and stated that we are only playing for fun and the rest of us play fluff armies.
We have on several occasions now played armies strictly built to beat this guy, upon which he literally throws a tantrum about his opponent doing exactly what he does. His armies have an 80% win ratio, mostly because when he gets orks he can not win at all
This evening finally ticked me off completely. I played Chaos and thought I had a decent army built up. I get to the table and in 1500 points he has the following, BTW please let me know if I have an honest reason to gripe on this army or if I am just whining
Traits, blessed be the warrior
Dis, die standing
Captain w/BP & CCW, Command Squad 4x bolters, vet serg w BP & CCW
170 points total
3X 4 assault marines 2 w/plasma pistol, vet serg w/plasma pistol and power weapon, furious charge
170 points each
2x 5 scouts with sniper rifles, serg with sniper rifle
108 points each
3x 4 assault marines 2 w/plasma pistol, vet serg w/plasma pistol and power weapon
155 points each
4 Devs w/heavy bolter, serg w/bolter
his army was 1496 points. it was your general cleanse mission so we started in opposite corners. we set out 7 pieces of terrain, he sets his 3 pieces to make a bottleneck which I had no choice but to enter if I wanted to play at all.
when it came to set up he placed every unit as far back as he could, leaving the devastator unit in front just within range to start hitting everything. Now I try to be a good sportsman and do my best to work with any scenario given to me but I had no clue how to respond here.
As soon as anything actually got close enough that they might do something next turn he rushed those assault squads in and blew me apart with plasmas, the dice were also on his side as he only took 1 plasma wound in the last 3 turns of play. My raptors gave him his only real cas as they made it into his dev squad while he was working with my horrors, who didn't do a single wound in their only turn of shooting.
Needless to say I lost with nearly every chaos marine dead, the plasmas even mad short work of my terminators, he hit them with 4 units at once.
So now my question, this is the seventh battle I have fought him with armies like this, if it isn't this it is assault cannons everywhere, I know I am not the only one who is sick of playing him, is it childish to ask that he not return??
Personally, I handle powergamers simply by not giving them there joy in crushing opponents by not playing them. It works wonders in our group because there are so many of us its not worth being left out just to win every game.
There are five of you and one of him, ignore him and maybe he'll get the message. If he's truly being unreasonable or unfair then none of you would have any problem with ignoring him while the five of you play. If he doesn't whine and run away then you'll see how quickly he changes just to not be left alone.
Take my love, take my land, take me to where I cannot stand; I don't care I'm still free, you can't take the sky from me.

I just slap em in the face and make them look at the kid they just made cry, then smash there army with my armoured company lol, but at least I warn my opponents so they have the choice to decline or carry on with the challenge, which I think is fair.
Ok- the resolution to this has nothing to do with armylists. You play because you enjoy the game, right? Do you enjoy playing this new joker? No. Simple answer- stop playing him. Simply say that you don't enjoy playing against him because of his attitude (no lies here). I don't know about you but I have so little time to play that I'd hate to have games ruined like that. 5 players is plenty for fluff battles, campaigns and mini-tournies. He'll get the message when no-one wants to play him.
No more NG spearmen, thanks! Now I need some pump-wagons!
i wouldnt say that army is unbeatable, he doesnt seem to have any high strength weaponry, so defilers and predators with indirect fire or mutated hull would be your best bet, and his high cost anti-meq plasma weaponry should play against him if you could take a horde army, such as orks against him, as you said earlier, that army couldnt handle it.
as for the actual question!, just say you dont want to play him anymore fullstop, its besides the point if anyone else thinks what hes doing is right or wrong, for you, playing the game is about having fun, your obviously not enjoying the battles so just avoid him from now on.

I am curious what you think Chaos could do to beat that army though?
Actually after having a really close look at that list..........it stinks, I've sneezed harder army lists than that, what on earth would he take out tanks with, and those assault marines are vulnerable theres so few of em, this list ain't hard, its a joke, I'd play him just to see HIM cry lol.
actually he built that list because he knows I don't use tanks in my chaos army, its part of my fluff, since he knew I was going Chaos instead of LatD he didn't need any tank stopping power, just all the AP he could get. sorry I forgot to mention that in my original post, I had JUST finished that game and he had left, I was still steaming pretty badly about it.
Oh in that case then.................poo lol, umm well umm
what exactly is in your list, if seeing that helps
My army starts with Raphael the Viscious, Undivided Daemon Prince
Daemonic strength, armour, aura, speed, essence and a personal icon of Undivided.
2 units of 10 marines including aspiring champions
1 unit of 10 chosen terminators
10 horrors and 10 flamers
this is my general set up although my daemons tend to change from game to game at random.
the fluff around my army is that the chaos marines were originally of my SM chapter Swamp Sloggers, which I built as ork hunters. They arrived on the planet Scarolis by drop pod, where they ended up stranded in the middle of a tyranid hive and were slowly consumed by chaos as the planet was pulled into the warp.
What I limited myself to was a ground pounder marine army, with a few raptors available after being given wings to fight gargoyles. but there were no SM vehicles transported to the surface, and only a few heavy weapons, mostly heavy bolters and reapers. I also have given myself access to a single defiler, in my fluff it was trapped inside a leman russ tank.
They're ladies. We can't hit ladies.
No, no. They're Daemonettes. They'll tear you limb from limb and steal your soul
But sar, thats what ladies do.
