I was wondering what the general consensus was on alternate army lists, not the big ones that have their own codex but the smaller ones that featured in Codex Armageddon, Eye of Terror and even White Dwarf in the past.
Do you feel that such armies enrich the game and bring it more into line with its background? Or do you feel that they bog the game down and confuse people with army lists that they have never encountered before and are unlikely to do so again?
Personally speaking I am all for such armies- maintaining a Space Marine army from the Relictors Chapter and use the White Dwarf army list despite it only being opponent’s permission.
i think that it brings a certain difference and fun into it. having never played one of these armies or playing against one, i wouldn't know first hand.
one thing i would be worried about is cheaters.
person 1: yeah, my flamers use a blast template because of my special rules.
person 2: really? can i see?
1: i left my rules at home
2: well, you seem trustworthy. i will believe you.
1: oh, nothing, just talking to myself.
Depends on the list.
Most variant armies like that aren't broken, just really unbalanced in some ways (the slayer list from fantasy almost always loses to a ranged army, no matter what). My only requirement for 40k is that the list was printed no earlier than third edition and that there isn't a more up to date version of the list printed (except for armored company, I'll let that one slide).
anything from eye of terror or something like kroot merc i would have no problems playing against or using (im acctualy looking into starting a LaTD army soon) i think they are an intresting twist on typical armies and have realy cool potentional for conversion.
the WD lists i havnt even seen for a long time. i dont think since 3rd edition came out. so i'de probably ask for some clafafication but what have no problem playing against them in a friendly game.
