So I was looking at the Las Vegas Grand Tournament results page, and was wondering how winning tends to affect your sportsmanship scores. So I did a statistcal analysis.Overall Average was 8.3 per game. Not a huge difference, but basically it means that, on average, you will score up to 5% worse if you kick your opponent's butt, and 5% better if you take it in the shorts.Code:Battle Avg # of Score Sports Samples ------ ------ ------- 70+ 7.89 22 60-69 8.20 26 50-59 8.31 38 40-49 8.45 34 30-39 8.72 25 0-29 8.54 17
I've noticed that trend. I think, if you give your oponent the benefit of the doubt, then the cause is simply psychological, and has nothing to do with your sportsmanship. Nobody likes losing, and simply losing puts people in a slightly more judgemental/bad attitude. Vice versa, if you just kicked someone's butt, you're less likely to score them low on sportsmanship because I think most of us can empathise with being on the "business end" of a competative army.
At worst, its a revenge score "he beat me.. I'll show him"

WINDMILLS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY!
At a small tournament I went to last year, I came 3rd place without winning a game.
It was with my Dark Angels, my first army, which I dont regard as being well painted (maybe 6/10).
So with winning and painting as a non-issue, I think that shows I was getting good sportsmanship scores. Perhaps, as you say, because they were beating me..
I did have rotten luck too (I beat the tourney winner in a friendly match afterwards- same lists. That goes to show the dice werent going for me on the day) so perhaps they sympathised even more so.
Being on the losing end didnt affect the sportsmanship scores I gave out. I gave a bad one to a cheating *sshole when he beat me, I gave a good one to a nice bloke when he beat me.

Create flames for a galaxy and it will be warm. Put a galaxy in flames and it will be warm for the rest of it's existence.
Ah thats so awful that people do that. Honestly, you go to a competition to compete, not to win. If you don't do well, it's nobodies fault but your own. I worry that this is a flawed system, where good players get low scores from bitter losers.
Personally, most all of my oppoenents in the past I would give the top scores for Sportsmanship. My games are usually filled with laughs and co-op. But there have been a few bad lemons..
Shaft 'em. Anybody who plays like that doesn't need the points.
