Being new to High Elves and a 'veteran' of only 6 games of WFB I need some advice. I come from the fluff side of the game, for me having a great painted army and having an enjoyable game is so much more important than winning.
Anyway, I have always wanted a bow armed army (something about living in Nottingham I suppose). Now I know Wood Elves have bows, but they don't have chariots and dragons and other cool looking models which is right up my street (think great looking painted army bit).
So, how about the following as a basic idea.
One High Elf Hero with some fancy longbow
Two blocks of High Elf Archers with full commands
A small unit of Shadow Weavers
Tiranoc Chariots with longbow armed riders
Repeater Bolt Throwers
And I'd love to squeeze a dragon mage in their somewhere.
As you can tell I don't have the army book yet. I will get one at the same time as buying some models - hence the questions now. The basic idea is to have the archers and bolt throwers whittle down the army before they are hit by the chariots (and dragon ).
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
I’m going to take a stab in the dark and say your going for a 1000pt army. If so there is no way you can get all that and a Dragon mage in. Save the Dragon mage for 1500pts as by the time you’ve given him equipment your looking at around 400pts on him alone.
Get a unit of silver helms with a noble in their to replace the dragon mage role to support chariot charges, and backed him up with either a/some mage/s or noble and mage.
Not to sure how big a units your looking at with your bowmen but if its anything under 15 the only upgrade I’d bother giving them is a musician so the can rally on Ld9 instead of Ld8, otherwise your just haemorrhaging your points when you loose a unit.
Shadow Warriors are cool and are even more impressive in small games for character/war machine hunting. The Tiranoc chariots are good to. They’re not the daemons that Lion chariots can be but they’re good enough. I don’t know, if you find yourself with enough points left over either buy a Lion chariot or better yet another unit of Silver Helms. Though in my opinion Ellyrian Reavers would be much better at getting flank charges and supporting your chariots or nobles unit.
Now just running through it this is the kind of force your looking at with my suggestions;
Noble = 141
Barded steed / Heavy armour / Shield / Lance / Temakador’s gauntlets.
(1+ armour save with 5+ ward against strength 4+, strength 6 on the charge)
Mage = 170
Lvl 2 / Dispel scroll / Silver wand.
(knows 1 more spell than normal for his level)
10 Archers = 115
10 Archers = 115
6 Silver Helms = 178
Shields / Full command.
(go with noble)
Tiranoc Charriot = ##
Repeater Bolt Thrower = ##
6 Shadow Warriors = ##
Total = 1000pts
Power dice = 4
Dispel Dice = 3 + Dispel Scroll.
Now this is just a suggestive force but I hope it gives you the kind of idea of what can realistically fit in a 1000pts of High Elves. Of course you could exchange the silver helms and mage for another chariot and bolt thrower along with bulking up those archers or getting three chariots even, but this is pretty solid for 1000pts.
Hope it helps a little.
Thanks for the advice - rep for you.
First I was aiming at 1500 points, because I have read that dragons are expensive (points wise), but I just have to have one
Other advice I have gleaned agrees with your comment on units of 10 archers with a musician.
I was thinking of the following.
3 units of 10 archers with musicians
1 noble on foot with some sort of magic bow (joins one unit archers)
1 dragon mage
4 tiranoc chariots (riders armed with longbows)
2 repeater bolt throwers
5 shadow warriors (fits GW boxed set size)
Not sure what this lot would come to, but from working out unit costs from GW's web site, have an idea it's around 1500 points (assuming about 120 for the noble and 400 for the dragon mage).
My next thought is to add some Ellyrian Reavers with bows - but this would be later than the above - for the time being the chariots will be the fast moving part of the force (plus the dragon of course).
Your comments on the above would be most valued - especially how to 'build' the bow armed hero and the dragon mage (what to give them, magic weapons etc).
Also consider Lothern Sea Guard. They're not generally one of the most cost effective units in the army, but then neither are archers. Sea Guard would give you a unit that can shoot, but also fight reasonably well in combat when the enemy gets to you.
Thou shalt remember:
Warhammer Fantasy armies do NOT have Codices. They have Army Books.

You could also use a Great Eagle or two. IMO they are the best unit in the army for the points.
Put a Noble on one with the Reaver Bow and maybe the Encheated Shield.
