I have been playing a couple of games against shooting heavy lists recently,(archers and guns, more than warmachines), and have come up with this list that has done ok for me. I would like your opinion on this one ladies and gents.
Lords and Heroes:
Dragon Mage Lvl2: 435pts
Ring of Fury
15 Spearmen: 160pts
14 Pheonix Guard: 315pts
Banner of Sorcery
Keeper of the flame has the Skeinsliver
12 White Lions
6 Dragon Princes: 190pts
PD: 8 + 2D3 + 1 Bound
DD: 5 + D3 + Teclis Scroll
Because of the small nature of this list, I am likely to be deployed first, giving me +2 to the first turn roll, and therefore a high percentage of obtaining the first turn. This allows my army to advance quickly, using the dragon mage to aim at the closest war machine area, and Teclis to aid the main line.
Teclis will have the lore of life against shooting armies, and use the Howler wind and Rain lord spells to limit the damage that the main area of the force takes from shooting, while the Dragon mages ranged spells and bound ring will be used on any high strength war machines.
With the main attack strength of shooting removed the faster elements will be used to flank, while the eagle and dragon mage go magic hunting.
Let me know what you think
As i said in chat dude, looks pretty solid. Think id prefer one of those new Lion Chariots over the old horse pulled ones. The extra movement is nice but the cooler model and extra hitting power makes up for the 1" loss i think.
I haven't tried the PG's out yet, so maybe you know better, but i don't think they are a good mage guard. With only 5 str 4 attacks, there's a good chance a cheap multiwound unit could go in and have their way with T2 Teclis. Now, I don't know who you're playing (you didn't tell us) but every shooting army I can think of, also has a mobile unit that could perform this action (killing Teclis) And that's probably the first thing I would do as an opponent (teclis is worth so many points) I just don't see that many other places to put him. Maybe your magic is so strong that the opponent just throws up his hands in despair.
It is a good point Buckero0. Perhaps if I am using the magic to cease str 4 and below shooting against the unit, a unit of swordmasters as protection would be a better option. Their larger number of attacks should help me rend some numbers apart.
Would that be a better option. It has been the Pheonix Guard so far due to the ward and the fact that they cause fear.
I am playing wood elves and empire btw.
Well, I didn't look at Teclis that closely, but I remember playing beasts, I charged 3 minotaurs into a unit of swordsmen (35+strong including detachments) I was way undermanned, but I directed 6 attacks against his 2 wizards, 2 against regular guys, and 1 against his champion. I ended up slaughtering both wizards, and the champion and broke him and ran his unit down. Now you may say I got lucky, and I did hit pretty well, but it's not too hard to hit a WS3 guy and it's really easy to wound a T2 guy. Unless Teclis has a decent ward (can't remember) almost every flyer, fast cav, mage hunter ought to be able to put wounds on him. In my mind, the PG are good at deflecting hits on themselves, but they can't kill stuff automatically like swordmasters can . No matter where you put him, make sure he is inside the unit (not on the edge if you can) and that your champion is always next to him (to take attacks away from characters and other champions)
Against wood elves, I would be very scared to take Teclis. They have 2-3 items that can sniper teclis out from his unit without you being able to do anything about it (one hits on a 3 and wounds on a 2, the other hits on a 2 and wounds on a 3 vs teclis). Empire has the same thing, but less reliable with the hochland long rifles.
I played in a tourney against the new high elves yesterday and it was a pretty nasty list. It has 3 special characters which I thought was a bit too much but ok. Asarnil and his dragon, carandyan and teclis. I played Strigio VC and butchered his army to the man. However Teclis is just insane. I would almost say he is more broken then thorek on his anvil. I mean with the banner of sorcery he was getting 11 or 12 powerdice per turn with teclis alone. And that means 3 spells with usually 4 dice is almost always a guaranteed irrisitible force. Sorry but who cares about the T2 when you see what he can do. I really think he is way over the top. XXX points for a almost certain 3 spells per turn? Try and survive with dwarves against pit of shades being cast succesfully 6 times. Or Ogres. Casting values don't matter for teclis since he counts on the IF anyway.
No points in future for characters please - GN

If you are really worried about mage hunter then put Teclis in with the WL. Teclis and the champion should be able to kill most things in contact with Teclis. I wouldn't drop the phoenix gaurd, I have had real trouble getting across the field without them even with White Lions. In one turn if you don't get off howler wind the SM could easily cop it.
