Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hey everyone. I put together this list for some friendly games and I was hoping to get some feedback on it. The intent of the list is to be a nicely balanced list in all phases of the game, leaning slightly towards magic. The first match I will be playing the list in will be against Tomb Kings if that helps sway any thoughts one way or another.
-Book of Hoeth
Dragon Mage 435
-Gem of Sunfire
Noble BSB 218 (Joins Dragon Princes)
-Barded Steed, Lance, Dragon Armor, Shield
12x Sword Master
-Banner of Sorcery
12x Sword Masters
5x Dragon Princes
-Banner of Ellyrion
2x Great Eagle
2x Repeater Bolt Thrower
Any and all comments are appreciated!
That's actually a pretty solid list. The one thing that I would be very worried about is having your Archmage being shot by every missile available to your opponent. Neither he nor the Eagle have any kind of save, and knocking him off the bird is nearly as effective as killing him, as it probably leaves him isolated, and probably not anywhere you could protect him with a unit. Also, Book of Hoeth is considerably less effective when you only have one other caster; your opponents will typically try to simply deny your other caster, and use scrolls if by some chance you cast something scary with your Archmage that isn't Irresistable.
I haven't played any games yet with Gem of Sunfire, because it seems like Silver Wand is just better in most cases. However, since I haven't tried it myself, I'll leave that call up to you.
Be aware that your Dragon Prince unit is going to draw a lot of attention if you aren't insistent on making sure to move your Swordmasters with it and staying together. That's the kind of unit that is begging to be double/triple-teamed if you run them off on their own.
I like this list a lot, it's pretty unique in how it sets up. But you're going to need to be very aware of tactics and movement because the list is very small numbers-wise: you only have 4 strong units (Dragon, Princes, and the two Swordmaster units), and you need to be particularly careful about psychology. Tomb Kings all cause fear, and you don't want to get stuck in a situation where you get auto-broken by being outnumbered.
Good luck with it, let us know how you do.
Thanks for the reply. I had thought the same thing in regards to the archmage. That is the main reason that I have brought the 2 other Great Eagles along. The plan is to use them to help block Line of Sight for shooting type units to the Archmage. Obviously it won't be totally effective, but that's the plan anyways. However, the great eagles other great purposes won't be of much use against an army that is unbreakable, and doesn't march anyways, so backing up the archmage is their purpose, and when the archmage is clear from shooters, then they can join the combat with flank and rear charges to aupport the Princes and Swordmasters in combat.
Interesting theory on the Book of Hoeth. In fact, that is the whole reason I chose the Gem of Sunfire over the Silver Wand. I plan on spending 3 dice (in most scenarios) with my Dragon Mage including the +2 for Lore of Fire spells (Roughly an average of a 12 on the casting roll with the bonus). This should make dispelling his attempts all that much harder, and help clear the way for the Archmage spells that don't go irresistibly.
Well, that's the plan anyways, we'll see how it works. I'll give a breif battle report when it plays out.
Quick Report. I'm not sure if this was the best testing of this list, though it turned out extremely well. My friend and I played 2 games. He was playing Tomb Kings as I stated earlier.
The first game lasted half of a turn.:party2: I got the first turn, and moved my Army forward using terrain to protect them against potential shooting. Cast Fiery Blast on a unit of Archers from my Dragon Mage which was too much for him to waste any Dispell dice on. Then successfully finished the Dragon Mages casting by dropping a huge roll on Flaming Sword, prepping him to get into combat with a big block of Tomb Guard. Then my Archmage moving with his Eagle shields, managed to cast 2 Lore of Death spells both irresistibly thanks to the Book of Hoeth. Both spells were cast with 3 dice. One went irresistible on Double 5's, the other on Double 2's (both met their minimum casting value thank to the third dice as well. Both of these spells were targeted at a poorly placed Hierophant. The second spell got the kill. His Army crumbled horribly, and he understandably conceded the victory.
The Second game lasted about 4 turns before I killed his Hierophant with a charge from a great eagle. He Crumbled again and realized that l his units that were still alive were about to be charged and destroyed by my Swordmasters and Dragon Princes.
The main reason I don't think this was a good sampling of the army list was because my Archmage irresistibly cast every single spell that he attempted. However, I do believe that the Gem of Sunfire on a Dragon Mage is a VERY good pairing with an Archmage and the Book of Hoeth. Casting rolls are high enough in value to cause your opponent to worry about their number of Dispell Dice. I'll potentially tweak out the foot troop units in this army, and potentially swap one unit of Swordmasters for unit of White Lions, mainly for more ranged attack protection. However, I don't see this as completely necessary and mostly would do it because it is purely a straight point swap.
