9 Dragon Princes-360

2 Bolt Throwers-??
total comes to 1894 so i have just over 100 points to play with. I cant see white lions(or the chariots) fitting in this army (as they dont appeal to me and im painting them green!) but i would love to include a unit of swordsmaster along the line. Please tell me where you think i am wasting points, thing i need in my army and anything else.
I would really like to include swordsmasters, possible a tirionic chariot, maybe another mage or possibly even a unit of phoenix guard. The idea is with this army is its a balanced force with sme (very) hard hitting units. Maybe the Battle stardard is a waste but it means that most of them are almost never going to break in combat. Anyway, critisise it and tell me what you think!
First of all, welcome to LO, I hope your time here is happy and helpful.
Now to your list. It is a good start, and a nice ballance, although I personally don't like the large cavalry units, as they attract a lot of firepower, but that is a personal choice.
I would drop the commands off of the archers, infact I would have 1 unit of 10 archers instead of 2 of 12 with command. I would also drop one spearmen, to give you a unit of 18. This should give you enough points to get a solid unit of 17 phoenix guard with full command to put the BSB in.
I would also consider the silver wand on the dragon mage. That way you can get the extra spell for his dice generating ability.
Just my thoughts
New LOChat functions now avaliable.

Agree with dropping the commands from the archer groups.
I would also drop the DP unit down a couple of models, as 9 models is neither here nor there - you won't get many extra attacks across the frontage against 5-wide enemy units, and you don't get an extra rank as you need 10 models for this. US18 is nice, but that's a very expensive way to get it, you could get a unit of 5 DP and a unit of 5 basic Silver Helms for the same cost, and have a bigger unit strength, and two targets rather than just one.
Anyway. dropping the DP to 6 models, and removing the command groups from the archers will give you more than enough points to field a reasonably good unit of Phoenix Guard (adding your spare 100 points).
Dropping both archer units to the minimum will release another few precious points, with which you can give your BSB the armour of Caledor and up the size of teh PG unit a little more...
And finally, dropping one unit of archers as suggested, and making your Spears into Sea Guard, save a few more points and makes your Phoenix Guard regiment plenty big enough.
Now remember that an entire unit can shoot at something that is either on a hill or a large target - so the FULLY ranked unit of Sea Guard can be used to advance up the battlefield, shooting at the enemy as you advance, and can even unleash a volley against a monster-rider, with the hope of downing the character riding the monster.....Of course, this means they aren't marching, but that quantity of firepower froma combat-effective unit is pretty good, and not to be sniffed at...especially if, for example you have advanced afar enough to shoot at a cannon on a hill...
I personally hate dragon mages as they are no good at attacking with only four attacks
at less than half the points of a bare dm you can have a unit of 10 swordmasters
in stead of the one you have now and the prince you could have a prince on a star dragon and a mage level 2
Thankyou very much for all your posts =)
Thankyou Gingerninja. I agree that the Dragon Princes as a unit of 10 is a waste. So i will drop down to 5 and put the prince with them so it will be 6 wide. I will also drop one off the spearmen and yes, make them 18.
Pheonix guard, im sorry, i am not a massive fan of. I love the models ad their 4+ ward save is awesome but they just dont appeal to me as much as swordsmasters. 1 attack at str4 with their halbeards isn't amazing, 2 attacks at str5 ws6 seems much nicer. I agree with goliath with the swordsmasters. I would prefer 15-20 becuase 10 will just get shot to pices with jut a 5+ save and t3 (like all elves) considering your opponent is going to know how powerful such as unit is in combat. Sea guard aren't bad but i dont like them. Do they fight in 3 ranks like the spearmen (sorry i don't have the army book with me to hand)?
Dragonmages i really like. I know 4 attacks isnt immense but it is also a really powerful caster (what people forget). I was also thinking of including another level 2 mage in the army, but i just run out of points!
Anyway thankyou for the advice and ill aim to add the updated list soon.
Well, your dragon mage takes up 2 slots so you don't have character slots for another mage, much less the points. I do worry about your magic resisitance due to all the magic power armies out there. The dragon mage doesn't get the +1 to dispel which I find necessary in 7th edition magic.
Yes seaguard fight in 3 ranks as well.
Your BSB could use a little help. If you want the lion standard on the spearmen, give it to the spearmen. Let the BSB take some magic items otherwise he'll get creamed going against an enemy with lots of attacks (ie. goblins with spears to ironguts or whatever). He needs a better save than a 3-4+ in my opinion. Dragon armor of caledor or what have you.
