I bought some Silver Helms, and was wondering what to buy next to have a legal list.
I know Silver Helms aunt that good anymore but I adore the models way more than the DP plus their $45 cheaper.
The High elf battalion is usually good for starting an army although it comes with 8 Silver helms you can still use the archers bolt thrower and spearmen/sea guard also you might want to pick up a noble or mage set.
Ok, let's see what I can remember about the current High Elves.
As a basis, the Elves are a very elite orientated fighting force. They have great weapon skill, good initiative and weapon/armor options and they alway's strike first which is a huge strength there.
So let's see. The Battalion has already seen mention, and these are often the best starting point for an army there. 8 Silver Helms, 16 Spearmen and 16 Archers alongside the ever popular Bolt Thrower. What does that give us in terms of gaming terms?
You have a solid block of infantry, and a solid block of archers. Silver Helms aren't the best of choices for a deadicated charging unit, but they are very fast and if they hit something in the flank whilst your Spearmen are already engaged, they are going to do a lot of damage, negate all the rank bonuses, maybe help to outnumber and run things down on 3d6 instead of 2. The Bolt Thrower? Wear down ranked infantry, tear apart heavy cavalry, make lone characters and casters dive behind cover or threaten the high toughness monsters that occasionally show up.
A well rounded force when it comes down to it, but how do you add to this? As I said before, High Elves are very elite soldiers. Take for example the Swordmasters and Pheonix Guard. Elven Weapon Skill, High strengh from weapon choice, special rules to make them better still and they'll strike first against the vast majority of foes. Don't want an infantry heavy army? I'm a huge fan of the new White Lion Chariot, all the kick of a chariot, in addition to some cool-ass lions.
This isn't even getting into the fact that you can field 2-3 dragons in less then 2000 points.
