Welcome to Librarium Online!
im new to HE but iwant to give them a try.
this is the first list i have come up with, and if you couldnt tell im scared of magic. I actually took a third mage out and replaced it with more seaguard... so any advice on that in general would be good, magic defense that it.
here is the list (by my count i have 25 points left if you see anywhere to put them.)
Archmage, lvl 4, staff of sorcery, 3 dispell scrolls. - 360
Noble, BsB, radiant gem - 150
Mage, lvl 2, 2x dispell scrolls, silver wand - 185
seaguard - 265
20 strong w/ command
seaguard - 265
20 strong w/ command
7 shadow warriors - 105
sword masters - 240
14 strong w/ command
pheonix guard - 240
14 strong, command
my only fear is that ive put 240 points into the sword masters that i have personally seen die horribly before they get to the lines. Is there a solution to that? or should i just choose another unit?
any advice is greatly appreciated.
While I am no where near as experienced with high elves as some of the other people here, I will try and help you.
I think that you may have too much core. I believe the general consensus is that a HE player should take as minimum as possible which is why you see so many lists with 2x10 archers and thats all. but if you want the seaguard for static defense while you shoot your enemies, try more phoenix guard or some white lions because they also add quite a punch in melee.(I would probably put some dragon princes in there, coolest HE unit IMO) I am also unsure if you will need so many scrolls on your characters, depends on who play of course.
Also you can use high magic and cast shield of saphery on your swordmasters to help them survive long enough.
I hope this helps.
I think that you are paying too much for teh seagaurd, I think that they are best kept in small units of 10 or 12 and used to protect your bolt throwers and the rear of your army.
So in saying that I would change both units of 20 Seagaurd to 20 Spears, they are should perform a similar role on the battlefield and the savings should be worth it. (you could even drop a unit and take Dragon Princes instead)
With the points saved you could get an extra Bolt Thrower or 2 eagles depending on what you are normally up against.
With as many scrolls as you have, Staff of Sorcery is probably overkill on the defensive side of things. I don't know how you normally play but sometimes you are going to have to take the chance and roll some dispel dice. I would prefer your L4 to have the silverwand or seerstaff or maybe even the starwood staff.
With regard to the Swordmasters I think that patience is the key here, target his shooting troops taht can lay down the most fire in the early game before you move into range. With 10" march HE can get to where they need to be in turns 3 and 4 if necessary, plus we don't win many battles of attrition in general.
Finally your BSB need some armour/ weapons something.
why do you have so many dispel scrolls?? you are a high elf player, unless you are playing against slann, you should be able te dominate the magic phase without scrolls.
I would give your archmage the silver wand, in combination with an aggressive lore. besides that, give your lv2 mage high magic including shield of saphery to shield your swordmasters and drain magic to mess up the other players magic phase.
next: drop the LSG, you could leave 12 of em in there to protect your boltthrowers against scouts and marchblockers, but no more.
the points you would get from that would be enough to place a nice unit of DP's, or maybe a unit of white lions, or a extra rank for your PG's or SM's.. if you want living SM's at the other side of the battlefield, you could add a noble with the sacred incense, shielding you from shooting.. also can you use the lore of life to shut down your enemy's shooting phase
