Welcome to Librarium Online!
First off apologies for burdening you with yet another 'I'm new help me with my 1k list' post.
I recently got back into Warhammer (after about 9 years) along with a friend and put together this list to get me going. My friend will be playing Orcs and Goblins and I think initially we'll play a few smaller points games (1k - 1.5k) to re-familiarise ourselves with the rules before seeking out any other opponents
Anyway here is what I came up with:
- The Seerstaff of Saphery
(Will be with the Lothern Seaguard)
Lothern Seaguard x 19 (Full Command)
- War Banner
Dragon Princes x 5 (Champion and Standard Bearer)
- Standard Bearer has Banner of Sorcery
- Champion has Gem of Courage
Lion Chariot x 1
Repeater Bolt Thrower x1
Great Eagle x 1
= 997 Points.
I tried to go for a reasonably balanced list, although I'll likely be playing against Orcs and Goblins alot I didn't want to tailor it too much to fighting them. Let me just justify a few of the choices I made:
Mage - Will probably take High Magic and choose Curse of Arrow Attraction and Fury of Khaine. The Banner of Sorcery should give him enough help on the Power Dice front to cast both of these each phase (with the exception of miscasts/dispels ofc).
Lothern Seaguard - I know these are expensive but I thought that the versatility of them would hopefully pay off in a smaller game. I plan to start them off 10x2 then reform to 5x4 when something gets near enough to engage them.
Dragon Princes - I quite like the models and they seem alot better than they were when I played before. Should be able to hit a flank quite hard.
Lion Chariot - I've heard alot of mixed reviews about these. I agonised over whether to include one or drop the Gem of Courage and go for another unit of 5 Dragon Princes (without a command) instead. In the end I decided to go for it because I really like the look of the model (lions...pulling a chariot...) and providing it doesn't get taken out by ranged attacks in the first or second turn it may just survive long enough to carve a decent unit up.
Repeater Bolt Thrower - These still seem awesome, especially if I can get a Curse of Arrow Attraction off.
Eagle - Although I tried to generally not to tailor things to an Orc and Goblin opponent, nightmares of fanatics carving my (pretty small) units up forced me to include one of these. Its sole function will be to draw out any fanatics straight away, and if by some miracle it survives then perhaps go after some War Machine crew or march block something.
Anyway thanks for taking the time to read this longer than intended post - any ideas/criticisms etc will be very welcome, as well as pointing out any glaring errors I may have made.
i think you made a good list, though many people will tell you that LSG are not worth the points. you might consider leaving 2 of them at home, giving you an 9x2 formation for shooting and a 6x3 for CC, this would make your CC frontage wider, and all your models will be able to attack.
as for the mage: i think taking a Banner of Scorcery just for a single LV2 mage is a bit pricy: you spend over 200 points on a single character I'm sure it will work great, but i think there will be better things to spend your points on. (like an extra eagle).
as for the competitiveness against orcs and goblins: i think you will have a big problem winning any combat resolution because they will always outnumber you and always outrank you. so you really need to cause some panic tests if possible, and really pick your fights.. if you dont: youll be swarmed
Thanks for the feedback
Yeah they are undoubtedly pricey, I don't think I'd pick them in a larger point game but it just seemed nice that they could fulfill two roles.
I did wonder if the Banner of Sorcery might be going a bit overboard, really I just wanted to ensure that I could get the most out of the mage as he's going to be pretty vital in supporting the shooting and helping thin out whatever the Seaguard will be fighting. Not sure what I could really allocate the 50 points for if I left it out, another eagle would be nice but I can only have 2 rare choices and one is taken up by the Bolt Thrower
if you take some LSG out as i suggested you might just be able to squeeze 5 Phoenix guard or Shadow Warriors in to force some fear tests and for some flanking capability. rememer goblins do not fear elves when they outnumber you more than 2:1 so 5 phoenix guard wont scare a large unit, but could cause terror to a unit of 10 or less
Yeah thats a good point, I'll have a look at it later and see what I can squeeze in.
I think Byjugo's right about the LSG number: drop 2 and get them some shields, otherwise they'll die like crap - even more than usual
Moreover, this would free you some space, exactly 10 points, which you could use to give a ward save to your mage, ora a Gem of Courage to your DP's champion.
Hope this might help.
