Welcome to Librarium Online!
I'm thinking about a friendly game going full out magic against my buddies dwarves at just 2000 points. I know he will have his anvil of doom for a fact, so i will have the pendant. Other than that though, this is what my list is consisting of.
Mage lvl 2 on elven steed (have to use the models i have) Jewel of Dusk, Pendant of Vengance.
Mage lvl 2 with 2 x power stones and the gem of courage.
Mage lvl 2 with Folaraith's Robe. (hey it's dwarves. I can hold up a unit of thunderers indefinately this way if i need to.)
2 x RBT
10 x swordmasters of Hoeth, full command, Banner of Sorcery, Teclis and the lvl 2 mage with power stones will join here
10 x white lions of chrace, Full command, War Banner, Armor of Caledor.
10 x Archers
10 X Archers
Lore of Shadow on teclis, lore of metal on the other mage in the swordmaster unit. and lore of high magic on both the remaining to mages, the one on steed, and the one in the robe.
So what do you think? I wouldn't consider this the ideal list for most games, mostly due to the lack of combat units, but I wanted to try a full on magic unit, and right now we are set on a 2000 point game.
I'm thinking of seeing if he wants to up it to 2500 maybe so i can bring in more ground troops and/or cavalry. But for now i want to see how crazy i can get with magic.
i've you want to have a magic crazy list: you've got it.
i might want to change some things though...
i would change the 2 power stones for the staff of solidity, 1+ on every roll is better then 2 times 2+
i don't like folirath's robe neither because i think you don't want your entire army to move, you just want to sit back, an magic him away.. right? then why bother for a robe, if you can boost your magic? (ring of fury + silver wand will do nice )
get the silver wand... its GREAT
as for the amount of feet you have on the ground... it sucks... because you go all magic..
so this means you don't want to attack in CC right? then why do you have SM? get PG Certainly if you want the unit to give your mages some cover... (SM will only have a possible AS6 against dwarf shooting, PG will have same save + 4+ ward )
If you want to magic him to death: stay on 1 line, don't waste points on CC units.. if you get to CC, your dead (but hey, he only marches 6 inch!and if he marches he can't shoot )
Or you have to lake 2 mages less, and put more feet on the ground. (but that's not your intention right?)
A suggestion with the Foliariths robe mage would be to use lore of shadows base spell to get him into combat with either a warmachine or a shooting unit early, and hope he passes his leadership checks at -1 (outnumbering). It would even be worth using hime to tie up the Anvil, and hopefully he doesn't give a magical weapon to his rune lord guy.
To go with this you want a spell that you can cast while in close combat, shadow is ok for that life is good, light and death also have spells that would be useful.
It's a trick and I don't like to rely on tricks although it will be unexpected.
My mind boggles at the thought of a High Elf magic army WITHOUT the Seerstaff of Saphery. Surely you can find a way to crobar it in there (I'd replace the Pendant with it as I'm not a fan of using race specific items, just doesnt seem right).
You do need somewhere good to hide Teclis and your others, and SMs are not it. Phoenix Guard or simple spears would be a much better call.
May Saphery be with you.

This is good information thanks.
I originally had wanted to use the silver want/ring of fury, but i forget what i ended up switching it out for. I may change that for the robe, but I DO like using the robe against dwarves because he never has anything to attack him with. He tends to go runic armor and banners, and rarely any runic weapons.
I don't want to lose the pendant, because like I said, I know for fact that i will be up against the anvil, and if i have the pendant, he is very unlikely to even attempt ancient power.
As for not bringing phoenix guard, i simply don't have the models or that would have been my main choice. Swordmasters and white lions are what i chose because it's what I have. I have a regular unit of spearmen which was not included in the list, but i might have to change it up a bit.
I mostly wanted the swordmasters and white lions instead of any spearmen because I can use magic banners with them. I can not take any magic banners on my spearmen.
Banner of Saphery is a must I think if I'm going all magic.
I love my white lions in close combat by themselves, and they are probably the only unit I would move around the table. My thinking was that it would be best to have them draw most of the fire from shooting because they soak it up nicely, and then my mages would blast away at the dwarves.
He will have to move closer to my line if he wants to do anything effective by shooting at my other units, and for him to do that, my white lions will be in charge range easily. They tend to win combat against his dwarves in most cases, so i added a battle banner to them to be safe and figured I'd let them have a run of things, plus i always set woods down somewhere in terrain, and the white lions can move right through that.
Any of my thinking make sense?
if you have spearmen instead of SM and Archers, you'll will have a LOT of points left to play with.. could even buy you a BSB and 2 small units of SM
ow and for the record: your Spearmen CAN take a banner.. up to 25 points
I would say absolutely YES to Banner of Sircery.
How friendly is this game against Dwarfs - would they allow you to use WLs as PG.
If that is the case then I would recommend one unit of archers, one of PG and one of spears. Use any points left to try and boost your PG to 14/15.
If it isnt then WLs are the best Anvil you have, and I would use them in place of the PG above.
Not sure who I want to win this game... split allegiance.

I as just about to ay uh, no on the banner for core units, because it's not in the codex, I went to check myself again. and noticed it wasn't listed, like i had seen before.....
... THEN i saw at the bottom of the page for the first time that any core unit can take 25 points.
Though that still wouldn't help me with the banner of saphery heh
