1000 pt beginner in fantasy

Taking up fantasy now, played back in the edition when bretonnians and lizardman came in the new starter set.

Playing my first proxied game today here is a list I will use.

Mage w/ Level 2,Jewel of Dusk, Dispell Scroll , talisman of protection

15 Sea Guard w/Champ and standard

15 Archers

10 White lions w/ Champion and standard

Chariot

Chariot

Bolt Thrower



Is this mage build legal? I know he can only have 1 arcane item but im not sure what the rules are regarding dispel scrolls.

Where to go from here would be appreciated...i am considering buying the high elf army box or battalion box...are these worthwhile purchases?

I dont want to make the mistake i did wheni started 40k by buying a bunch of boxes and not knowing what was truly useful and now i have a bunch of models I never use.

That list looks fine and is perfectly legal.

15 Archers is a lot and I have mixed feelings about the effectiveness of seagaurd.

The battalion box is good value but the chances are that you will not use the Silver helms much as they are, convert them to Dragon Princes, I would also suggest you attempt to turn some of the archers into spearmen, 20 spears is a good size and archers only need to be 12 at most (since they only fire in one rank now). The silver helms probably need an extra 2 to be really effective.

The list got annihalated by a lizardmen list with a stegadon, witha mage on top, 2x20skink with kroxigor and 5 cold one saurse calvery.

I got both chariot charges off, one in a skink /kroxigor unit and one in the cold one calvery. The chariot in the skin unit managed to stay locked up for 3 turns with the kroxigor causing equal wounds against the chariot most turns.

the 2nd chariot managed 6 impact hits and only managed to kill 1 cold one!!!! Then took a few wounds in return, failed ld check, ran away. Next turn the cold ones flank charged a seaguard unit, then the seaguard unit took a bunch of wounds and failed the ld check and got ran down.

the same turn the stegadon charged the white lions to the flank, failed the terror test, ran off the side of the board.

I am fairly new this edition of fantasy rules but am a long time veteren 40k player. For determining combat is the modifier to your ld by how many wounds you lose combat by (and then any other modifiers from the table)?

I suppose I had some unlucky rolls.

1 thing I will note is that a level 2 mage is probably not necessary in 1000 points, I think i will focus on being a defensive mage at this point level.

Another thing is chariots charging on their own against either high wound blocks or elite units is a bad idea. I am going to remove them from the 1000 pt list for now, and then try something else.

Is it just me or the best HE lists using minimum core choices, tons of specials, and super tricked out heros/lords? or wait is this how all the best fantasy lists are?

It is true that HE can max out their specials, and probably should actually do that (unless you have some specific reasons not to do that, e.g. want to do a citizen levy focused army). My personal thought about this list: I think it lacks high S attacks, which are necessary to take on Lizardmen. But of course it's easy for me to criticize, already knowing the list you faced, so thumbs down for me now. To make more constructive criticisms:

I'd give LSG their shields - HE tend to have bad AS, let's pimp them when it's possible;
musicians - help rallying and could even ein you a combat;
perhaps one chariot only is enough at 1000 points, otherwise try not to charge them alone/separately (so either both on same target or charge with another unit, or also try and get a flank charge on a tied up unit);
I like combat heroes, even at 1000 points, but that's me. I usually field both Mage and Noble at 1000 pts;
next time you could try with Spearmen istead of Lothern Sea Guard and drop your Archers to a 10-12 models unit. With the points you'd save, bulk Spearmen and/or White Lions up.

Sorry i forgot to post, yeah they had shields. not that it really did them that much good but were good.

A bit of theroy hammer here - but has anyone attempted to use LSG in MSUs with shields so that they get bow shots, 4+ save in combat etc?
