Well, this is my first list, only played Fantasy Once before but picked up my Army Book today and came up with this. It is made of the battalion and a Mage I bought so is on quite a budget, but I just intend to use it so I can learn to play better before I start replacing units. School League is basically I have to use 2 Core choices, a Hero, and I can only have 1 special/rare, but being High Elves lets me take two ^^. Anyway, heres the list, if ye don't mind say anything I could do to improve it or any useful tips for my first few games ^^
High Elf Mage Level 2 135
15 Archers 165
15 Spearmen Battle Standard 145
5 Silver Helms 105
Repeater Bolt Thrower 100
Are you sure that even geing a high elf, you HAVE to take 2 core? because it is a huge advantage that we only have to take 1.
as for your list, i would take out 5 archers, give the mage the jewel of the dusk (giving you a chance to have succes casting 2 spells each turn).
Then, if you have some points left, you might want to put the warbanner (common magic items list) into your unit of spearmen. (1 core unit can choose a banner worth up to 25 pts).
Jewel Looks awesome. Worth giving up one and a half archers
I also gave my Helms shields cause I like how they look, so that's 10 points gone =3. Extra combat resolution sounds good though, I will have to move my list about a bit, thanks for the advice! (Still not got to grips with everything I can use, pointed out some good stuff for me )
your right about the silver helms, without the shields they are much less efficient.
Talking about silver helms: there are quite some people who convert their Silver Helms to be Dragon Princes.
Dragon Princes are a lot better, and give you more bang for your buck.
Furthermore, you'll be using your archers in units of 10 mostly. just because that's the minimum core required. And you don't want a command in it, because that's just a waste of points. So you might want to consider to make the entire set into normal archers, or make 10 archers, and convert the last 6 into spearmen.
this gives you the possibility to field a unit of 18 or 21 spearmen (going 6 or 7 wide for maximum atacks).
just a few things you could do. I did assemble my battallion in the 'traditional' way, and i kinda regret it, so now you know the alternative
Thanks for the advise! I like the Dragon Prince Models, so if I was ever to use them I would buy a lot, and ive got a few Silver Helms left im sure I could convert . Im not too sure on turning archers into Spearmen, but it's something I might consider.
I came up with some edits to my force though ^^
Level 2 Mage w/ Jewel of Dusk + Sacred Incense 180
15 Spearmen w/ Standard + War Banner 145
10 Archers 110
5 Silver Helms w/ Shields 115
Repeater Bolt Thrower 100
i think you have got some of the best possible builds you could make with just the battallion set.
now a little bit about tactics
Do you have an idea where you are going to put your mage yet? ( you need a bodyguard for him, or he'll die in the first 2 turns)
And have you thought about the 9 lores you can choose?( if it's your first time with magic, i suggest you use the lore of fire, very easy lore to use, and pretty good in small battles)
Also be wary with your silver helms. they look great on paper, but on the field you'll only want to have them in the enemy's flank or archers, and even better if you get both
I was pondering between High, Fire, Light and Heaven Magic. the 2 latter have generally lower rolls which might be useful in smaller games, While Fire looks to have nice damage... and High is just awesome (unless I roll a 6, not so good for small games)
And with this list he goes along with the spearmen, as with archers he might not get the range, he dont have a mount so its the only option left
I'd go with High Magic, the most versatile lore out there, and if you roll 6, just swap it for number 1, you WILL need it.
5000p. High Elves
