i have just recently started playing again after a long while of jus painting and a friend of mine has challenged me to a 3500pts slug fest against his Orcs and Goblins.
Just wanted some advice on the best units to field not a full list just a nudge in the right direction.
Mages/Archmages are a good start. Other than that, O&G have an animosity rule I think, so they have a chance of attacking each other if they're not in combat with somebody else.
I find that a unit of 20 Phoenix Guard 5x4 will hold up against almost anything an survive the whole game. If you want them to have some more punch, give them the Razor Standard. If you're mainly using them for defense give them the Banner of Sorcery so ur mages have more casting power.
For your core slot I think you'll find two larger units of Seaguard with shields will hold up great, something like 35 elves in 7x5 formation and the other 30 elves in 6x5 formation. With Command that should put it just over the 875 points that core requires you to have. These guys are flexible and if they get charged, the strike first with every elf in the unit and re-roll misses. And that's after they stand and shoot.
A unit of either 14 white lions 7x2 or 15 5x3 works really well too. Give em the banner of arcane protection and they'll be nearly as survivable as the PG until you get into combat, but either way, they still grind up anything they touch.
If you prefer Swordmasters over the Lions, then use them in either 7x2 or 6x2 unit. Don't give them any extra ranks cause swordmasters that can't attack are just a waste of points.
I try to include at least 2 great eagles in every list. And I don't leave home without at least 1 bolt thrower. Usually 2 Eagles and 2 bolt throwers are instant includes in my lists. Eagles are amazing for disrupting war machines and taking out it's crew.
Aside from that, my only other suggestion would be an Archmage with Book of Hoeth.
Hope this helps.

Fantasy: High Elves 7000pts / Warriors of Chaos 6000pts. 40k: Eldar 5000pts / Chaos Marines 2500pts.
Scorpios got it about right imho.
All id say feel free to add my new little toy of doom. a unit of 9 DPs with champ and standard. War banner. Champ with a potion of str (great for eating bigger beasties like trolls or giants), then for extra punch add a noble with star lance and anything this unit meets in a charge should find a quick path to oblivion.
Then once in game try and run your combats with the DPs first incase they overun into an already engaged unit (woot free combat round for DPs)
Cheers for the advice guys. I had a go at making alist, feel free to rip it to shreds
Need the list so they can shred it.
