Yo im somewhat new to fantasy and my local store is doing a 500pt tourny. so i figured no better time to start then with a low points. so i made up a list and im wonderin if i could get any help with it.
Hero - Mage 120pts
- Silver Wand
- Talisman of Protection
Core - 10x Lotheran Seaguard 130pts
- 10x Shields
Special - 10x Pheonix Guard 150pts
Rare - Repeater Bolt Thrower 100pts
total 500pts feel free to tell me whats what since i basically pulled this outta nowhere thanks.
Well I'm pretty much a newbie myself, so I'd take my advice with a big pinch of salt, but I would swap the Seaguard for Spearelves and use the points saved to bump the unit up to 14. Put the Mage in here and field it 5x3, giving you more bodies on the field and an extra rank that can also fight thanks to their spears. I'd then also swap the Pheonix Guard for one of the more killy elite infantry choices (Sword Masters or White Lions). This way your Spears can act as an anvil, taking the charge and holding the enemy in combat, then your Specials can be the hammer and swing in for the kill. Just my thoughts. Again, as I say, I'm a rookie too so don't take my word as gospel.
I agree with the above stated tactic. I would definitely choose White Lions over Phoenix Guard due to S4 with GW. They have the punch you want in a small game. I'd have the mage grab life so the more wounds you resurrect, the more effective it is.
ok thanks. i was also playing with an idea of taking instead of boltthrower and spearmen/seaguard. in stead taking 2 groups of 10 archers. cause the minimal testing ive done with my friends woodelves my white lions seem to be able to handle his ummm dryads i think he was runnin em in 2 groups of 9 plus he had i think a group of 15 archers. it seemed like at this point level anvil isnt so much necessary if i can simply hit em hard with the white lions and peck at em with my archers. what are yalls thoughts on that? Thanks oh and i am totally sold of lore of life btw thanks for that.
I always find it hard to make such a small army as my friends all use armies with low costing units (I.E my friend once took 100 slaves for Skaven in a 500 point against me).
With your mage, what lore are you using? I would recomend High lore and just take the 5+ wardsave.
Although I prefer LSG, I agree that in smaller battles you get more for your points with Spearmen. Although I live and die with SM, I have to back down and say that WL can be more effective in smaller battles as some armies with have so little to hit. taking a unit of 10 PG will never work out. The won't deal the damage and you will just eventually get bad rolls killing them off easily.
About taking Archers - They can be very effective IF you get decent rolls before they reach you. But as soon as they get you in combat, you are next to dead.
I hope any of this helps, and just feel what suits you at the end of the day. =D
High Elves \ Ogre Kingdoms \ Lizardmen \ Blood Angels \ Dark Angels \ Dark Elves
W100+/D20+/L100+ \ W17/D0/L2 \ W1/D2/L2 \ W3/D0/L3 \ W7/D2/L9 \ W1/D0/L1
Basically after playing a few rounds i think im gonna run with this settup
Hero - Mage 110pts
Core - 10 Archers 110pts
10 Archers 110pts
Special - 10 White Lions 168pts
total pts 498
i plan on running high magic with 2 spells due to the silver wand and unless i get something amazing ill be taking the first spell which is the 5+ ward save.
tell me what yall think.
Lastly, for work against his dryads, you might want to consider giving one unit the banner of eternal flame (possibly White Lions?). It is only 10 points and give a nice flaming attack by all in the unit
