Hello, new to the forum and to Fantasy but have been a 40k player for quite some time. Now my friend and I are playing against two veteran Fantasy players. This is a rematch of; High Elves (Me) & Warriors of Chaos (friend) vs. Ogres & Vamp. Counts. A simple run down and explanation of what is going on can be found here; http://www.librarium-online.com/foru...ire-ogres.html (Our horde formations to deal with other Hordes, Vampire and Ogres...) where my friend has posted on the Warriors of Chaos forum. I am here to figure out how my list looks overall and a friendly fellow on the link I just posted gave a few pointers. But I thought talking to some High Elf players might shine even more light on the battle to be had (this coming Monday).
-Armor of Caldor
-Vamp of Def
-Gem of Courage
-lvl 4 HE lore
-Tailsman of Saph
-Folariath Robe (this is the right combo to make him invincible right?)
-Drag Armor (high heels, wig and lipstick included)
-BSB Battle Banner
-lvl 2 Fire Lore
-Jewel of Dusk
30 Spearmen, Full Command
30 Spearmen, Full Command
30 Sword Masters
-Ring of Corin
-Standard (initially thought Razor Stnd but now I figure bit of an overkill so I need help here bad!! Should I go resist Terror or give them Magic resist what do I do!!!)
So! Now all that is around 2500 and I assume I will put in a couple RBT and Great Eagles OR maybe a chunk of knights. Thoughts feelings? Some problems we are running into is who will take more of the Magic phase being as the way the veterans play is sharing the power dice pool. My idea with my magic is to augment my front assault (spearmen SM) having the spearmen cover flanks and SM straight up the middle with the Archmage who will be solo. The Prince and Noble will be with SM as a monster DeathStar unit. The fire mage will chill with archers in back. I know the archers will be weak as they usually are but I figure with Curse of Arrow from HE lore and Flaming Sword from the fire mage maybe they can hurt someone. Now I'd advise reading the link I posted to get the background of the other players. I mainly would like to see if this list is meh, cool or what!? Thanks a ton and I hope I didn't do anything to go against forum rules if so plz tell me to fix. I tried to follow dem rules. Alright thanks again and hope to get some awesome advise!
Well, hate to seem like I'm stalking you around the forums, but I play High Elves also (where my username came from) and have for a long time. I'll try to give you a hand with your list, since my last batch of comments were meant to be passed to you, rather than me giving you tips directly.
First off, I still stand by what I said about dropping the Prince. I don't have my book with me at the moment, so I'm not entirely sure, but make sure that you only have 1 set of armor on this guy, Armor of Caledor is definitely armor, but the Vambraces of Defense are also armor choices if I'm not mistaken. The Gem of Courage is good, but it would be my first dropped item if you needed to save yourself a few points. Also - against Vampires, you're going to want a magic weapon to get through their Ethereal creatures, otherwise you're lining yourself up as Wraith-bait. So either grab the cheap enchanted item to make your attacks magical, or grab yourself a magic weapon.
The L4 mage is a good choice, but why not give him Lore of Life? I know that Curse of Arrow Attraction can be good, but the Elf spells are all a very mixed bag - it's hard to write up a tactic for them. Worse yet (in your case) your enemies are using regiments with lots of wounds, meaning that a couple of hits from a magic missile isn't going to really phase them. Life lets you bring your fighters back, or boost up their toughness or grant them a Regen (just like Blessing). Better still, it forces Strength Checks with Dwellers, which can gut those huge units of Zombies and Skeletons you'll be facing, and make quite a dent against Ogres as well. All the while, if you keep Throne of Vines on your caster, you're immune to Miscasts on a 2+. Life is generally considered the "must have" lore for every High Elf army.
As for his combo - if I recall, putting the Robes and Gem on the same guy is illegal as they are two items of the same category. If not, then I don't think you're using the correct combo anyways. Your intention I take it is to make him Ethereal, and then use the Gem to make all Magical attacks in Mundane blows. It works, but it's too much effort. Believe it or not, this guy can stay safe if you keep him inside your units right up until combat - Life even gives you back a wound for every successful spell.
Your BSB is as good as it gets, unless you could give him some type of Wardsave as well. If you ditch the Prince, I'd like to see the Armor of Caledor on this gentleman, otherwise, just give him something to fall back on when his 5+ armorsave goes to crap.
L2 Fire Mage - with the way you guys are going to be choked out on dice, I'd skip this guy or use him to cast Shadow spells. If you use him for Shadow casting, the idea is to swap him in with your L4 if the guy gets stuck into combat. If you skip him, you won't miss him much. Flaming Sword doesn't work on shooting attacks, and most of the Fire spells are those tiny missiles that your high-wound foes will just shrug off and laugh about.
40 Archers - this made me cringe a bit. Let's do a bit of math, shall we?
40 archers firing at 15" + will hit with 20 shots (if they all get to fire)
20 shots will wound 10 skeletons/zombies (both T3)
The Skeletons will save 3.33 of their number (assuming they still have Light Armor and Shields)
That's 7 dead skeletons each turn, from 40 archers. You invest almost 450pts into killing about 45pts worth of models each turn. Once those Skeletons are in combat, you can't even shoot them anymore.
I understand your reasoning about possibly getting Curse of Arrow Attraction into a unit and hitting them much harder, but the fact is still the same: they're S3 bows. Our archers are generally considered to be highly overpriced. The reason is that they have I5, WS5, and ASF. It makes them seem good at combat, but they should never actually see combat. Take Lothern Seaguard instead if you want bows, and use these points for something else.
The two units of 30 Spearmen are good, I'm guessing you're going 5 ranks of 6 men. You could squeeze in another 10 for each unit, to make yourself a lot more comfortable, especially without Lore of Life in the list as it stands. These guys are great when they're striking, but after that, they die like dogs.
30 Swordmasters - this is another one where I have to ask what the logic was. Again, we'll do a little math:
30 Swordmasters against T4 Ogres (assuming Horde Formation)
40 attacks = 26 hits
26 hits = 17 wounds
30 White Lions against T4 Ogres (assuming Horde Formation again)
30 attacks = 20 hits
20 hits = 16 wounds
The results are almost identical, the Lions are likely going to cause 1 less wound, but they are blessed with their Lion Cloaks and the ability to move through dense terrain. Your Swordmasters lose 1 attack in each rank behind the first, that's points that you paid for that attack going right down the drain. Swordmasters excel in small units, working on the flanks of your Spearmen blocks to win combat while the Spears hold the enemy in place. I would split these guys in half and give each unit a Musician and nothing more. If you're worried about unit size, I'd make the cut-off a 20 man unit of Sword Masters, but even that is wasting resources.
As far as a Banner, give them the Banner of Sorcery - you are splitting dice with your partner, so it's good to have as many dice as you can get. This is a good way to get them.
oh and u level 2 is illegal
Thanks for all your comments Captain I'm going to mull all your information over and math hammering. See what I can get reworked and as far as you following me over the forum it creepy but helpful hahaha. Thanks again and I should get another list up in a while.
Thanks Humphrys20 I did make a mistake on the lvl 2 mage and actually the Bladelord he can't have that ring lol. Thanks!!
If anything, split the archers into 2 units of 20 with a musician in each unit, start them out in 2 lines of 10.
If they ever seem like they're going to get into combat, do a free reform with your musician and make them 5x4.
Fantasy: High Elves 7000pts / Warriors of Chaos 6000pts. 40k: Eldar 5000pts / Chaos Marines 2500pts.
