I am pretty experienced w/ fantasy, but I am new to the pointy ears. I have always looked at this army, and recently came into a decent sized army. I think I will take them to a 5 rounder this july, and need to start practicing/painting.
Heres what I have cooked up so far. Expect a battle report soon.
Archmage - 350 - unkillable, and near loremaster.
Lvl 4 Light
Talisman of Saphery
Noble - 173 - rock hard, hits hard
Armor of Calidor
Mage - 165 - picks the 2 spells my lord doesn't want
Lvl 2 light
Mage - 125 - scrolls caddy, 5+ ward for my SM
Lvl 1 High Magic
34 Spearmen - 356 - lvl 4 mage bunker
Banner of eternal flame
11 Archers - 126 - Fills out core, kills chaff, stores lvl 2
12 Archers - more chaff killers
10 Dragon Princes - 365 - hammer
Banner of ZOOOOOoooooom
18 Phoenix guard - 350 - bsb bunker
Banner of sorcery
15 sword masters - 255 - hammer
Oops!! I thought I was in the army list tab. If a moderator is reading this, can you move this to the army list section?
Light seems really popular at the moment, why have you gone that route with your AM?
The level2 with seer staff seems like an unnecessarily expensive way to get the spells you want on AM, esp with the extra caddy as well. Feel like that is at least 165pts that can be better spent elsewhere. Potentially you could make the L2 a caddy and give a noble The Radiant Gem for a L1 caster and little extra oomph in combat. Personally I wouldnt bother with either the L1 or the noble and I would take a different lore than Lore of Light on the L2.
Everything else is fine, for the Cavalry did you consider Silverhelms over DP 7 pts per model is at least 2 extra bodies in the unit which means you only lose 4 attacks but I get wanting DP over SH.
I think you should check the points on your noble. Isn't that a little bit overpriced?
Anyways, I'd drop the Archers. To be frank, they are incredibly overpriced for what they do. Maybe a block of 20spears to put your archmage in. You could then use the other block in combat. I like the 10 Dragon Princes, but I'm not sure that you need full command. If you could find the points, add another couple guys so they can still break ranks even if they lose a guy. Like Allonairre said, I'd drop a mage. If you wanted to keep the Lvl2, might I recommend Shadow? Okkam's Mindrazor makes our troops ultra-killy. The 2nd spell is up for grabs, though I would take either the sig spell or the -D3 strength spell.
Again, you don't need FC on the Sword Masters. Muscian+Champion is good enough. Personally, I'd recommend 14, so you could go 7x2, to get maximum number of attacks for your points.
Looks good so far! Keep it up!
First time playing high elves
Playing against Dwarfs.
Dwarf lord loaded for bear
Rune lord and 2 rune smiths set for absurd magic defense
Battle standard thane
15 hw/s warriors
~40 hw/s long beards
30 iron breakers
He had tons upon tons of tough infantry. No shooting/war machines, just all beat down.
I actually combined the archers into 1 big unit for the sake of simplicity. They are really there to fill out my core. Im looking to buy another 30 spears.
The sword master went off and broke the small unit of warriors and reformed, while my spears went up to force a charge by the hw/s long beards to protect the sword masters. Meanwhile the hammer horde was moving up to try and flank the spears, and he sent the iron breaker to protect their flanks. His iron breakers ate a frontal charge from DP and a flank from my PG. They broke hard, and ran off. The DP overran into the hammerers, lost half the unit, broke, and later reformed. By this point all of his longbeards were dead from a SM flank charge. At the time of the reform my litteral entire army (even the archers who were moving around the table to try and get a shot from around a giant forest) was pointed at his lone hammer unit, and then charged it at once. After 3-4 combat rounds the unit was wiped and he was tabled. I never even lost a unit.
Oddly enough, I never even got to cast a spell. His magic defence was just spectacular. He dispelled everything, even on the turn i box carred my spell dice.
I took light because i think a 36' march from dp around your army is funny. They get ridiculous amounts of rear charge, and kill dudes.
Seeing the army play, as it was my first time using them, I think I have found a niche. I loved ogres in 7th (i know, trust me, people would always laugh) because they were best used in small flanking detatchments with lots of positioning and lots of multiple charges. With 8th, everything is about massive units and hitting really hard, especially the new Ogre book. The HE seem to still thrive on maneuverability and hitting hard in specific places in order to win.
I have realized DP are not my thing, and I think I will take a 2nd SM unit and beef out my PG. Breaking ranks is really important, and SM like being on flanks to minimize the return damage. They also keep beating down things on the second round, and will likely be more useful than the DP at their role.
Lore of life seems like a no brainer at this point. The lv2 will likely start playing around w/ shadow to drop oughness and strength.
I think I like the fluff of the noble wizard with a gw in a sword master unit who can cast the 5+ ward spell. Then he seems more in place. Perhaps a sweet modeling oportunity.
Have a look through all the lores, esp for the seerstaff mage, often we disregard lores based on the majority of spells as they aren't worth it for the 1 or 2 useful spells in the lore. Seerstaff gets around this perfectly.
Being able to choose the 2 most useful spells to compliment your AM casting is fantastic, except for Fire where most of the spells are fairly similar although Flaming Sword of Rhuin is useful for units.
Good luck with the rest of your games, sounds like that went perfectly.
Fire does seem great for flame cage and flame swords. Spearmen and the phoenix could really use the +1 to wound. Flame cage just says half your unit explodes if you do anything.
If your choosing spells may I recommend Beasts? Wyssan's Wildform is a great spell for HE. +1 Strength and Toughness makes our spearmen sooooo much better. Our Phoenix Guard? Even better. The 2nd spell is tougher, but you have several good options. Amber Spear is a good monster killer. Curse of Anraheir forces them to stand still or lose 1/3 of their models, regardless of toughness or armor. It also makes it harder for them to hit us. Savage Beast can make your noble a total beast in combat. 7 S9 attacks (with GW) will make a mess of ANYTHING. At least, almost anything.
