Welcome to Librarium Online!
Is this a feasible army?: (sorry, it's not perfect, don't bother correcting points, I probably made an adding mistake or 2; but basically I'm asking will this strategy work with he (and if these are suboptimal units for this idea) - basically shooting support with heavy hitting calvary))
Working on this portion
likely 2 lvl 2 mages 2 dispel jewl, seer,
commander with the dragon princes
10 Archers (120) * 3
8 Silver helms; shields, heavy, musician, standard, horsemaster (410) * 2
8 Dragon Princes; musician, standard, drakemaster (253)
8 Shadow Warriors (120)
2 RPBT (200)
2 Great Eagles (100)
Err basically; do I need a unit of spearmen in a successful he army; or will calvary backed with archery work?
First off, you show some promise... but everyone that plays HE will tell you that the archers suck. They are not worth their points. The RBTs *repeating bolt throwers* are much better.
IMO.. the 2 great eagles are not worth taking either. Id rather use the Rare solt and get another 2 RBTs. *those things rock*
Our CC heros *close combat heros* are not that good. Easily killed. If your putting him with the Dragon princes, that is good.
But since your playing a 2,000pt list, you can have 1 lord character in there, so Id suggest an Archmage lvl 4. And possibly drop one of the Heros.
Shadow warriors *thumbs up!*
To your question, you dont need Spearmen to win and have a successfull army. But if your planning on shooting alot, and then attacking with your Cav. is not the brightest idea besacue of 3 reasons.
1) They are not the best troops in the game, there are others that are alot better. The elves still die... especialy because they are frail *T3....*
2) They will get bogged down in combat and be flanked. Meaning tag teamed and you loose.
3) Outnumbered. You have a block of 8 Cav. What if you run into a block or 25 or 30 Inf. And for each Cav modle you loose... you loose more unit stregnth then infantry.
If anything, eithr go an all Cav army. *cav, chariots, mounted heros and no shooting/inf.*
Or shooting/magic where you have a base of 2 or 3 units of spearmen *units of 20 strong with command .. are particullary good* And with these defensive units you can attack in 3 ranks.. meaning alot of high WS and I attacks. Along with these... best core units in the game. Take 2 or 3 units of SH *silver helms* wich are 5-6 in size with no command, but mushhave full armour. These units will be used to flank the engaged spearmen units. You could still take a DP *dragon prince* unit .. atleast if anything... 8 strong with command. Id suggest either go with 5-6 or 10 plus in size.
Any more questions just ask. Most of the people on here that play HE are very knowledgeable...
archers dont suck. they just arent good at massed killing. 1 unit of 10 archers is sufficient.
you need more then 400 points for characters....save at least 600.
20 spearmen is a good idea. 8 shadow warriors is a bit much. 6 would do.
2 chariots is the best support unit in the list
Hrmm; I played wood elves a bit; so am used to being dependant on archers (err, 5th edition; the difference compared to current HE archers was their longbows had 6" greater range).
Are 2 units of 10 too many? I see alot of lists running them; and think I would find that preferrable.
Changed the rest a bit:
9 Dragon princes [+ will be joined by character (commander: Pure of heart, dragonscale sheild, ring of fury)]
2 lvl 2 mages (one has 2 dispel; one has jewel of dusk, seer) ~ might go for one lvl 3-4
6 shadow warriors (rather than
2 * 5 Silver helms... are sheilds worth it? (% save increase:% of points 2)
6 reavers (bow, musician)
Still have about 100 points left over.. hrmm. Could take 4 RPBT; but eagles are excellent at preventing march moves and mage/warmachine picking.

if you can't decied, look at it this way: you army could have 4 bolt throwers (4 strength 6 hits armour peircing, or 24 48" shots at strength 4) thats gonna anoy some one!
IMHO take the Eagles, at 100 pionts you get 2 Eagles that can do everything you said or you can only get 1 extra RBT.Originally Posted by unforgiven555

I have 100 points after taking (2 rpbt and 2 eagles).
So change 2 eagles -> Rpbt?
Inital question still stands; are 20 archers too much?
I would stay with the Eagles.
Drop down to 10 archers and with your extra points pick 2 Chariots. You only lost 6 arrows, because the Chariots have shots 2 each. Then you can take the Chariots and run them in tandum with your Silver Helms for support or even a hard hitting attack combo.
yeah go with ten archers. but you should always have 1 unit for fluff reasons. all citizen militia are recruited as archers so they can see a battle from a safe distance.
i wouldnt take bows on the reavers. heck. i wouldnt take reavers at all. id just drop them and add something else. id drop a unit of archers as well and get two bolt throwers.
10 archers + 2 RBT is excellent for taking out fast cav and support units. If they need some help the shadow warriors could not march for a turn and stick 6 more arrows at em.
