I am thinking of starting a High Elf army as my friend gave me (yes, actually gave) a unit of 15 spearmen and a unit of 10 archers. I have also converted a mage and a Commander who is meant for close combat. Why is everyone saying that HE suck in close combat when they have a str of 4 and a WS of 6. Their Magic Items are pimped even though they only have a toughness of 3.
cus he's only toughness 3 with 2 wounds and even if you gave him kickass equipment (a very easy thing to do with highelves) he's still too fragile to be considered anything other than mediocre. although personally i'm rather fond of a commander in a unit of swordmasters otherwise they are best mounted with lance in a small unit of silver helms and use to flank the spearmen.
but as to your question about why people say he sucks... cus he does!
"take my love, take my land, take me to where i cannot stand, i don't care i'm still free you can't take the sky from meee" ;- firefly
"i'm gonna grant you your greatest wish i'm gonna show you a world without sin" ;- serentiy
"I am a leaf on the wind, watch how i soar" ;- serenity
I Agree with Plague_00, HE caracters are fragile, so if you go in combat:
a) get the charge
b) get a good unit to acomponie him (SM or WL)
try these two combo's:
Comm: AoP, halberd (quite cheep, but is nice 4+ ward )
Comm: Aog, halberd, Talisman of Protection (hits hard, and has a 3+ armour and 6+ ward just in case)
(and yes i like halberds)
if you want to go in combat pich you target carefully. You could also put him an a cav unit. Fully kitted out:
comm, iltmer brarded elvensteed, guarding phoenix, som, enchanted shield, lance, Ha.
is a bit more expensive but hits hard and stays alive. Get him a unit of Sh, or Dp (gut then get dragon armoyr for the comm.)
Good luck and
If you are going to mount him on an eagle or a horse the following combination is what I recommend.
Heavy Armour, Shield, Lance
Helm of Fortune, Guardian Pheonix.
On a barded horse this gives him 1+ rerollable armour save and a 5+ ward and 3 str6 attacks on the charge.
On an Eagle add a longbow and he still has a 3+ rerollable armour save and a 5+ ward, which makes him a very useful flanking unit.
New LOChat functions now avaliable.
