Hi all. Here's my first army list posting. woot! I fight orcs and goblins tonight. 2000 points, no special armies, no special characters. My opponent likes to mix up his army a lot, so I don't know what he'll play. Common Themes include (these can be mixed to some degree):
1. Cavalry: Savage Boar Riders, wolf riders, chariots, occasionally a wyvern. I can march block this to Death, so I'm not too worried.
2. Heavy Magic: Lots of that nasty orc magic, especially the big bouncy foot of gork or mork (multiple stomps. I hate that spell). Again, against HE, I can probably drain magic the heck out of him, so not all that worrying...
3. Heavy artillery: 4 Stone Throwers, 2doom divers, often protected by night goblins w/fanatics and savage orc spearorcs... This worries me a lot, as stone throwers destroy 11 point elves in droves, and doom divers do nicely against my cavalry blocks. AND if I charge in to destroy the war machines, I get 'fanaticked' to death.
My opponent doesn't ever bother with combat resolution armies, he just outright destroys me on the charge or through magic/shooting. Since I don't know what I face, I'm playing a mixed arms approach, fairly standard. Here's what I'm thinking:
2 units 25 spear elves, std, mus. 293 pts each
2 units 5 silver helms, chmp., mus., full armour. 136 pts each?
1 unit 12 archers, mus. 150 pts
1 unit 5 Reavers, mus. 97 pts?
1 unit 5 shadow warriors, mus., 81 pts?
2 eagles 100 pts
2 rpt. bolt throwers 200 pts.
I think this puts me at 1486 pts, leaving about 500 for characters and other specials. I could drop the spear-elves down to 20 strong, or drop the archers altogether. The spears are large to withstand stone-throwering, and the archers are there to shoot wolf riders, war machines, and chariots.
I don't want to go full magic, he's too likely to be expecting that and bulking up on the dispel dice. What kind of characters would best support such an army. maybe archmage with the 'book of irresistable force'? What Lores would be most valuable? Would a character with a nasty bow (probably reaver bow) be better than the unit of archers?
Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, and again to those who helped out in the HE forum on the Siege Orc topic.

okay. first of:
shadow wariors can't have musicians.
GOBLINS FEAR ELVES IF THEY DON"T OUTNUMBER THEM MORE THAN 2:1
use this to our advantage.
make the archers 10 , those two extra won't do alot. though i am no fan of archers, keep them they can be good against gobbo's and fanaticsdrop the reavers, they dy very fast and he will target them ASAP since he won't like 18'' charge range.
drop the champ on the silverhelms that attack won't matter they are ment to break flanks.
for characters use:
Prince, blade of leaping sea gold and armour of protection, shield. the ward save is handy against those bloody rock lobebrs. and the sword allows you to carve through a lot of line troops.
lv2 mage, anullian crystal
lv2 mage, jewel of dusk, dispell srcol
this gives you enough defense and those mages are more then capable of handeling magic.
this sums up the characters to 563 points. w=ith the saved points on teh other places you should be able to include this in your army.
hope this helps and good luck tonight

Thanks for the help Elfwarden! oops on the shadow warrior musician. and the fear against elves is proving useful against those pesky wolf riders. I ended up playing a fairly magic hvy army. Here it is. What do people think?
Archmage: 4th level, staff of 'irresistable force'. Lore of life. Anti-panic honor...
Mage: 2nd level, ring of Fury, Jewel of the dusk, barded steed, Lore of heavens.
Commander: reaver bow, lance, hvy armour, enchanted shield, barded steed.
2*5 silver helms, chmp., mus. I agree I should have dropped the chmp.
2*25 spear-elves, std., mus.
5 shadow warriors
So far we played 1 turn (in 2 hours), and he only took 1 level 1 mage. har har. I thought he'd have stocked up, hence the irresistable force thing for the arch-mage. What would everyone change to fight generic armies?
