is the prince worth taking with the new rules
i mean for ** p. you get +1ws +1w +1a and +1ld and the ability to get a dragon and up to 100 p of magic items, but is it really worth it for a 2000p battle???
Lords are normally better value for points generally, the stat line boosts make the magic items you give him more worthwhile. Bringing me on to my second point that some magic items are restricted from Heroes (50 pts+), which again are normally better value for what they do. However Lords are rather risky when you come up against multiwound weapons, so its all a matter of opinion if you take them. But I'd say they're worthwhile
I'm going to say no, they aren't worth taking. Like you say, it is a pretty big price jump for only one extra attack in combat. Sure you can take more magic items, but thats just wasting more points IMO. What are you going to do, deck him out in magic armour and give him a magic weapon? So he is a bit harder to kill, maybe has a ward save, bit of a magic weapon... A Noble will be easier to kill, but cost a hell of a lot less points and only have one less attack, and I'm pretty convinced that a great weapon on foot is fantastic, and a lance/star lance mounted is fantastic, both of which a Noble can take.
Yes, princes can ride dragons. If you want to take a dragon to battle, and want it to be a pretty good one, then take a prince.
Otherwise, unless you have a specific combo in mind and a special task, such as the scouting armour and bow of seafarer, you're better off taking a noble.
IMO I think Princes are better tactically than Nobles for these reasons, a)He has better stats, so more effective. b)Like all Lords, he can take 100pts of magic wargear, so can be tactically sound when used in conjustion with the right gear. c)He can ride a Dragon! who doesn't want a Lord without such a mighty beast. Yes he might be costly, but so are other kitted out Lords with their monstrous mounts. Hope that those are some decent reasons why Princes are better.
I'd say that unless you're desperate to take a star dragon a noble will do the same job as a prince but for far less. I think i'd prefer to take a dragon mage and a noble with bsb over a prince on star dragon in most games, both costing roughly the same. It's true that there are certain magic items that only lords can get access to, but for overall effectiveness and the benefits you can add to your army as a whole, taking two characters over one is usually better (or one character and another unit of troops).
Can we make this into a poll?
I don't think it justifies one. If you want a big mf guy able to ride a star dragon and seriously kick butt - you take a Prince. If you want a more balanced army you would take several Nobles and spread them through your forces. Different tactics, different uses. Besides, if 'better' means stronger, everyone knows the answer already.
3000 points Tyranids
2000 points Blood Angels
1500 point Orks
I say save the points for swordsmaster champions as they are like hero level anyway;Y
