Hi, I was just thinking (dangerous I know), has anyone playtested a big elite unit like swordmasters and putting the banner of Ellyrion on them and just hidding them behind threes for the firt two/three turns until dragons/eagles/shadow warriors have taken out any missile threats to them? If you then give the champion the Amulet of Light they don't have to worry quite so much about magic and don't have to worry about their main downfall, shooting. Just a thought.
that was the amulet of purifying flame, which is gone in the new edition.
About the tactic...
You just mentioned a prime example a good WL unit tactic.
No need for the banner since they have woodsmen and just in case they have lion cloaks.
But the idea of using SM and the banner is a waste IMHO. The elven elite (especially SM)should be stuck in fast to do what they do best. Rout out the enemy face to face.
For more sneaky tactics WL will be usefull but SM should just get stuck in ASAP, not wait around.
Hope it helps

Whats wrong with laying a trap with SM, true they hit hard but they can still be beaten. I think it could be a nice combination to use SM walking through woods. They hit a lot harder then WL and cost the same (a bit more with Banner of Ellyrion), so try it! ;Y
sorry i meant amulet of fire. I think this tactic would be good for traps but also becuase Swordmasters are still S3 with a 5+ save, they have to get to combat first. Hide them for two turns and let your fast units take out missile units then walk them out past the trees or whatever the terrain is and let them reak havoc!
They dpnt need the banner to hide. A bit of a waste in my onpinion unless you're going to play on a table with difficult terrain in between you and you're eniemies. I would take it on a campain mabye, just in case.

I have decided to start taking a BSB with sacred incense, between him and my seerstaff archmage (always choosing Celestial shield) my swordmasters should be able to march up the field to do what they do best with few(er) casualties.
I have yet to see how well it works in play though.

It's quite annoying really. I don't have any of the 3 elite infantry yet and I've decided I want to add something killy...but the only models of the three I really like are the PG and they're the least killy of the three...darn!
Thou shalt remember:
Warhammer Fantasy armies do NOT have Codices. They have Army Books.
