    help with high elf prince

right so i want a high elf prince with vambraces of defence but shield i either:

    boost his defence using:
    golden shield
    (on barded steed)

    or his attack stronger using:
    star lance
    (on barded steed)

or have him in a chariot using a great weapon

Defence is already high with always strikes first and vambrances. As for the Star Lance, I like it in that it negates armor saves but a St 6 attack has a decent modifier itself -3! That would be with a great sword. With the lance you are back to St4 attacks in subsequent rounds.

The great weapon remains St 6 every round and strikes first.

I love the talisman of Loec. For that one fateful round where you are facing the "big nasty" (character or model), you can reroll hits and to wounds (note arguably you must reroll ALL dice) and your opponent must reroll ANY saved wound. Your attacks should then cause enough wounds.

Great weapon and mounted = str5 only, not 6. I recommend not using the chariot (too many things can target him and blow him up before he gets to charge). Golden shield is worthless. Especially if you have the vanbraces already. Really, for an expensive character, you should make him perform a certain task in your army, otherwise he's wasted points. Pick a task (or a couple of tasks) for him to do. For more defence, give your prince heavy armor, barded steed and shield (2+armor save, rerollable w/ vambraces and 4+ward) You still have points for the star lance which is super nasty on the charge. Put him with some silver helms and you have a cheap killing unit. With Dragon Princes, it's almost overkill.

For something in between, barded steed, heavy armor, shield and get your ward save from temakador's gauntlets or guardian phoenix, then you still have points left over for more magic items.

The star lance is overpriced in my opinion for what it does, str 7 isn't necessary unless you are going chariot hunting. A regular lance still gives you +2 strength on the charge which negates lots of armor anyways.

I have used the following setup pretty effectively a couple times.

    Barded Steed
    Heavy Armor
    Shield
    Lance
    Vambraces of Defense
    Reaver Bow

He still packs a hefty punch on the charge, has good defense ( 2+ armor 4+ ward with re-rolls for armor) and will surprise your opponent with his strength 5 shooting.

    go for vambraces of defence
they can really surprise your enemy

"ha ha, i wounded you with four of my spearmen. you're going down"
you roll the dice and get three 1s and your enemy laughs at you
then you explain him the rules for the vambraces and he will sit in an hour reading through your book;Y

I was in my local GW today and someone actually told me, with all sincerity, that the best item to equip your High Elf Prince with is the Book of Hoeth.

Apparently it helps with getting spells through.

The book of hoeth cant be taken by a prince as its an arcane item. And sieng as the prince cant cast spells it would be useless anyway,

Doesn't it say "any spells cast on a double"?

It gives irresistable cast on any double (apart from a miscast.)
