Hey. I know now a days that everyone dismisses the Silver Helms because people say they arent worth it compared to Dragon Princes. However, mine have done amazing so I dont see whats the big deal. I mean, with the Silver Helms they:
*7 points cheaper with shield then the DP
*move the same distance
*same 2+ armor save
*pertty effective on the charge
True they have a lower LD and WS and 1 less attack with the DP, but for 23points a model I find that a resonable price for Silver Helms when DP are a huge 30 points a model (worth 2 elite infantry i mind you). Silver Helms are worth there points to me personally but Im just curious what you alll think about them now in the 7th edition. Cheers!:drinking:
I'm not a High Elf player at all, but the impression I've gotten from reading the army book and listening to other people online is that Silver Helms are still useful as a flanking unit, where their main role is to remove ranks and get the +1 flanking bonus, while not taking too many casualties (between their decent armour and killing a couple of models on the charge). I guess you'd take them with pretty much no command in that role.
On the other hand, I see Dragon Princes as more of a serious hammer unit, able to win with support against the baddest of the enemy, or even on their own if they're equipped properly. If you want to spend the points, Dragon Princes can be the unit you call on to go through anything in a one on one fight. (Of course, it'd be a lot of points, but that's what's required when you're looking for a M8, 2+ save unit that can beat a rank n file block).
If I played HE, I'd probably try to go with a unit of each. Naked Helms, and the Dragon Princes with, say, a Warbanner, or even possibly a Hero-level character (and maybe occasionally that CR banner, just for fun).
I would take Silver Helms if Barding was optional on them. Then I could have my dragon princes with their 2+ save and M8, and my Silver Helms would have a more flanking oriented roll with a 3+ save and M9.
As it is I just think Dragon Princes have more bang for their buck. They can do anything silver helms can do and more. That extra attack , WS, and Leadership more than make up for that 7 point difference.
1,000th POST!!!! WOOT!
"I am the architect of fate!"
Personally I think that what hurts the Silver helms the most is the rest of the army being so expensive, this sounds stupid I know, hear me out. The 9 to 7 points difference only amounts to at most 45 points per unit, what can you get that is better than the attacks, WS, Ld that you have sacrificed. 5 bare DP should beat any opposing flankers hands down, and all it cost you is 3 elite troops, 4 archers, or 5 spearmen. If I need a flanking unit Reavers do it better, faster and fast cavalry, more fragile but cheaper again.
Helms just fit in a funny gap of not really heavy cavalry, and not really fast cavalry, don't do either job really well.
However 2 Units bare SH and 1 unit bare reavers costs the same as 2 units bare DP. That is a hard decision personally.
Reavers are better flankers, Dragon Princes are better line breakers. If barding was optional silver helms would be good flankers. If they where core they would be good allround.
After reading up on HE and speaking to various people, I am now of the opinion that Silver Helms are still very useful but are simply outclassed by Dragon Princes.
