Just go with blue, the best High Elf colour there is...
Greetings. As you might have read in my other thread, I am planning on (very carefully) starting a High Elf army soon. (by vary carefully, I mean buy one unit, paint it, buy another one. Not buy 10 units, don't paint them, and give up. Because that is how I used to play Warhammer, leading to my downfall... but now I'm back!!! erm, anyway...)
Since I like the idea of a Dragon Mage, and Silver Helms moved became a special unit, thus making Dragon Princes much more attractive (even more so now that they have 2 attacks each) I would love to theme my soon-to-be-started High Elf army around Caledor. However, I am not yet decided about the colour scheme I'd like to use.
Now, I do know that both red and green are acceptable colours for a Caledorian (?) army, but... I don't know which of these colours suits the High Elf army best, with them being High Elves and all.
What I mean is, I always saw High Elves as being very calm and rational beings, really old yet also very powerful. Something like an entire race of Gandalfs, but then elves. And, well... is red a colour which represents this? Somehow I can't imagine an entire army painting their armours red (because it's a very striking colour and might not work too well in the woods or something) and it's not exactely a 'calm' colour.
On the other hand, green might more be the colour for elves from Athel Loren or Avelorn, and not Caledor, right?
Yet again, the Warcraft Blood Elves (sin'dorei or something...) also stand out greatly from the Night (wood) Elves by going dressed in aggressive red colours.
And lastly, I am worried that an entire army of High Elves painted with red colours looks WAY too 'flashy' and weird for a High Elf army, while green might again be considered a Wood Elves colour.
To give you some idea I uploaded several images I found on the internet from both colours, none of them made by me and giving all due credit to those people who made them...
RED high elves:
Red high elf infantry
Red high elf archers
Red high elf cavalry

GREEN high elves:

A Tau Ethereal was thought to have been killed today by a Bloodthirster. However, many Tau were seen fleeing the scene and are considered suspects.
I voted green because I love the colour and paint my army green with a red accent colour.
I think it looks great but for a caledorian force with their dragons and dragon princes I would go with red as it brings forth the aggressive style of playing.
I think red is the way to go with a caledorian force.;Y

My own High Elves use red in their colours and I don't think it makes them look too aggressive. It is a darker red however, and I can see how a brighter red might give that impression. Mine use bleached bone for the robes and red gore for the trims, and I think it suits them. I've posted a couple of pictures in the painting forum.
Since both red and green are Caledorian colours, have you thought about seeing what it would look like if you tried to incorporate both colours into the scheme?
Thou shalt remember:
Warhammer Fantasy armies do NOT have Codices. They have Army Books.

I voted red i like the darker reds on DP's, like Ancalagon I used red gore with bleached bone as a contrasting colour.
I had to vote for green, but honestly, I don't use either color for my Caledorian army.
I went for a more unique aproach and used a dark shade of aqua for the army, with more off-white flesh color for the robes. The result was a darker army, and the aqua makes everything look older and more ornate, like weathered bronze. My High Elf army is the darkest hue in the store, but also considered one of the most striking, using gold or bolt-gun metal for mail, aqua for trim or lacquered armor, and snot green for gems and embellishments. Red is used very sparingly in my palette, and the whole scheme is done over a black basecoat. I based the army with rocks, to represent the mountainous terrain of Caledor.
I also tried painting red. Red can look very good or very bad. If used as trim it looks great. Your elves will be "red elves" just because red is featured on the palette. If you do go with red though, you can't use it in large blocks, because red IS violent and dark, but also regal. Rome used red- it can't be that bad. Dark Elves actually don't use red, so it's not like your elves will BE evil because they are red, it will just look garish and somewhat akin to a Chaos horde. I would like to try the grey robe, gold armor, and red trim idea from my LOTR force (meant to represent the fallen Noldorii from the Silmarillion tales). Red is always a great color if you want a 'rogue' or 'brooding' look from your elves, if combined with appropriate poses and conversions.
The Green alternative is a bit better. It can be used for trim or lacquered armors because it's more peaceful. Green and brown would seem camoflagued, but brighter greens mixed with whites or creams would look great. Once again, the benefit of the elves is that a simple, clean scheme will always pay off for the 'army of light' idea that many strive for. Using any color, be it green, red, blue or (as it used to be in the old days) light purple, for trim will look great.
I want to know- where was it stated that Red and Green are the colors of Caldore? I mean, sure, I understand that dragons tend to be Red or Green, but does that mean that ALL dragons are red or green? I mean, the HE have no green dragons shown, and their larger more powerful dragons are typically blue. I don't see anywhere that claims that high-elves have adopted 'state colors' like the Empire. I mean, if that's the case, what are Tirannoc's colors?
Sorry for the long post, I do tend to get a bit wordy.
~Personally I love the Darker Red with a bit of Gold, giving them a very noble approach. When I do think of dragons, I think of a red colour, especially since I've been playing DnD for a long time now, and I was introduced to Red Dragons first. A Prince with a Black and Burgundy Cloak, and Gold and Dark Red Armour, riding atop a Red Dragon. Stupendous.
Red is way more threatening then green and really gives your army a nice "edge" as most other armies do not include such colors on armor. The old HE army book has some nice examples of red DP's and phoenix guard. Red is a fiery color - Caledor is the the realm of dragons, sort of suits it.
For Caledor I would go Red every time.
Mine aren't Caledor but a very dark and brooding bunch of HE and I've gone for a Dark Red and Black theme with a little bit of brighter Red for some of the trimmings.
My armour is mainly a very cold silver although a couple of the elites do have gold thrown in there also.
Like someone else has said in the old HE book their are some great examples of HE's painted in red that are definitely worth having a look at.
How about dark blue?
Besides, I think you should just go for the colour you like the best no matter where your army comes from.
P.S. the colours of all kinds off clans and cults through the ages have been red and green
I like green myself. Caledor is known for dragons, green is more reptilian and i envision the typical dragon as green.
