As some of you may know, I'm theming my HE to be Spartan, red robes and bronze armour with the upsidedown 'V' on all their shields and banners. I had a 24 hour painting challenge on the weekend and finally got some models besides the silver helms I posted a few months ago done.
Spearmen first, as some of you may know I'm converting up a unit of spears to be in phalanx formation, so 3 ranks will have their spears facing forwards. I have hit a bump with the second rank, they are going to be very difficult to model around the front rank, but the front guys (kneeling) are done. I have painted their shields (with the Spartan upside down V symbol) but haven't stuck them on yet and a bit too out of it from lack of sleep to do it yet. The bases obviously need more work, darkening up. I haven't done a base in a long time so I'm still thinking about it.
Spearmen front rank
For the PG, I was originally planning on putting the V on each of their cloaks so they fit the army theme. But it turns out they have very wavy cloaks and it would be pretty much impossible, so I'm just doing it on the unit champion and of course on the banner of the unit (not done since he broke). They are nearly painted, the V needs fixing and some need a bit more highlighting or inking, as well as inking on the gems, but mostly done.
Phoenix Guard command
You can't see it too well in the pics, but for the unit champ I alternated the headpiece between bronze and silver for a bit of detail, can sort of see the bit I mean on the back picture. Do you think I should do tha for the whole unit, or leave the champ a bit different?
And finally, the Seaguard champion. I decided to use that smoke base from the plastic mage kit as a wave and I will have the front rank and a half in water, so the champion is riding up on a wave. It would be magically created of course. I found it especially difficult to figure out how to paint water, and I expect more trouble when I want to do the bases for the front two ranks, what do you think of it so far? I think I need to try to highlight up to white at the very high points to represent choppy water, but that will be very hard.
Apologies for the slightly dodgy image qualities, I can't really focus with no sleep for the last 2 days. If you want clearer pics I can try to do them later in the week, and definitely will of the spears when I put the shields on.
Edit: Links broke. Here are new ones.
I think your idea of spartans is really great!
I don't think the pictures are too blurry but if you could post some close-ups that would be nice. The water o the seaguard champ looks really great so I can't see what the problem was. Could you post the silver helm pictures in this thread as well as I don't think I've spotted them anywhere.
So, whats up next? Can't wait...

I like it! The seaguard champion has given me an idea for all the spare bits that I have left over from the mage box.
looks like a good start. Is this your old army or a new one, I'm guessing? Or are you still changing the army to fit 7th edition rules?
I really like that seaguard champion! But ehh, how did you make his cape?
Thanks for the comments so far. Yes, the Seaguard champ's cloak is from the archer kit.
It is a mixture of my old army being adapted to the new scheme (they used to be blue and silver, but that was too common for my liking) and a bunch of new models I got for 7th ed, including 4 of the new chariots, dragon, lots of spearmen, plastic characters, Phoenix Guard, silver helms which I will convert to DP and a few more. My next task will be converting up the second rank of the spearmen unit to have spears facing out as well, I think that will be hard to fit around the front rank but we'll see. Then also getting more of my Phoenix Guard stuck together and painted. And the silver helms are very close to finished, but not quite so I have to do final touches on them.
here are some WIP pics of the silver helms that I have uploaded.
Needs mistake touchups and lance painted, also chainmail pianted silver (he was before I decided chainmail should be silver to compliment the bronze)
I think horses chains should stay bronze, thoughts? Needs detail work (esp on his head) and lance.
All my standards for the army will look like this, as will all the shields. It is a bit of a pain getting bone onto scab red, but definitely adds character to the models.
Edit: Above links broke, here are new ones.
And while I am posting and rearranging my albums, I just noticed I had a pic up of one of my characters. You guys know Felix's Avatars of War range? I got the sweet High Elf from there. Since the photo he has had his hair painted and more detail done (particularly around the robes) but probably could still use a bit more colour.
Very good indeed.
I agree the horses should stay bronze and I think the AoW hero fits much more than any of the GW ones. Great colour scheme and everything.
Keep up the good work!;Y
