Welcome to Librarium Online!
This is the problem: like many of you I really like teclis but he has no protection of any kind. No armour(of course) no ward (or cast the shield) no nothing. So he needs a good bodyguerd unit to help this.
But wich one is the best? Sword masters? White lions? Just spearmen or lothern seaguerd?
I once tried a unit of ten shadow warriors with a shadow walker and put them in a piece of forest about 10 inch of my deployment zone. Making sure i got the first turn ( with some luck and the skeinsliver) and marched right into that unit. this worked quite well but are there other options? What do you guys do to protect him?
I think a unit of archers would be strong enough, particularly when he is positioned next to a couple of bolt throwers. I assume you aren't going to charge him into combat.
3000 points Tyranids
2000 points Blood Angels
1500 point Orks
Personally the few times I have used Teclis, I have put him in a unit of swordmasters with the banner of ellyrion and possitioned them in a forest, this protects them from missile fire and charges in most cases. i am sure there are many other options but this worked for me on both of the occassions i have used him.
swordmasters with banner of ellyrion and amulet of MR1 and immune to fire based attacks.
Stick him in some terrain/cover, you have an extra boost against magic and he's fireproof. If I remember, he's leadership 9-10 so you've got as good a chance as any of not failing a fear charge.
I mean Teclis is already in it, is it not better spend elswhere in you're army?
Together with the Banner of arcane protection you can give several units good magic defense of their own.
The idea of giving him a bodyguard of SM and hiding them in a forrest with the banner of ellryion is a good suggestion.
Maybe swap the SM for WL since then you can use the banner elswhere. (DP's anyone?)
Hope it helps

You'd think Phoenix guard with their new ward save. That or White Lions, SM seem to offensive based to me to be a bodyguard unit. I think a good bodyguard unit should be more defensive than offensive
The reason for using SM rather than WL or PG is if in the unlikely event somebody does get into CC with the unit in the woods with their high number of attacks in most cases, if Teclis is possitioned correctly in the unit, there should be nobody left in base to base contact with Teclis. This isn't the case with PG and WL.

You know, unless you're playing at least 3000 points putting him with a unit of swordmasters is useless, you can't always bank on hitting first, what about characters with high initiative and strike first magic item (dwarf lord anyone?) or chariots or ogres, impact always goes first.
My point being that in a 2000 or 3000 point battle Teclis (a great powerful mage) with sword masters (put to better use rushing in) is huge points and your opponent will spend that much or more points in his army to try to take it out. It's better to specialize like "keep them away" with the archers beside the throwers for example, because then they can cause a lot of damage to things far, and are less tempting to attack because they cost less points anyways.
If you want some assurance of CC defense put him with Lothorn sea guard, they're archers AND spearmen, which are pretty decent, besides they still cost less than Sword Masters, or those other elite units.
Plus with the idea of seperating your elite CC troops from Teclis it works to confuse your opponent, I play Orcs, but I would probably think the sword masters running toward me are easier to attack than the great mage, in the unit of spearmen/archers, AND I have to get around those sword wielding maniacs first (which is harder because elves have faster infantry).
Take the Sea Guard for Teclis, but still use the Sword Masters somewhere else in your army anyways.
Charging chariots into a wood is usually a fairly terminal experience for the chariot, and there is no requirement to only take one unit of SM. However i agree there are many ways of providing protection for Teclis and as I stated in my original post I have only ever used him twice since I don't generally like using named characters.
