After a 1 year break of warhammer- I return to find a huge load of updates- notably the new high elves- which I tested a few days ago against tombkings and lizardmen (2000pts vs 2 1000 point armies).
Because dragonmage was a new unit I tried him out : with lvl 2 upgrade, fury of khaine boundspell thign and silver wand...and I must say I was disappointed...
Maybe it was my incompetence and rolling bad spells (I got fireball, fiery blast and sword of rhuine...) but I found that he had little effect against tomb kings.
On the otherhand, the high mage did much better! Shield of saphery was really useful... though I was also unlucky and got vaul's unmaking which failed to go off with even four dice.
So what do you guys recommend? Was it a bad choice of items and tactics with the dragon mage- or is the high mage better?
Well one nice thing about the Dragon Mage that would have totally been negated by the Tomb Kings is his Terror. Also, while you had a good selection of damage spells on the Dragon Mage, a Tomb King player can negate that somewhat by raising back any casualties he takes. You really need to focus fire on them because unlike Vampire Counts, Tomb Kings cannot make new units.
Both mages and magical lores have their ups and downs. Really it comes to personal preference.
Your item selection for him was good, the ring and wand is probably the best offensive setup for the dragon mage. At the very least the wand is pretty much essential to get an extra spell thus extra free dice every turn.
It isn't really a matter of what is better between normal mage and dragon mage though, both are different and have very different roles on the battlefield. The DM is a very offensive character who will do damage to your opponents, and has ther dragon under him, but is also prone to being killed easily. The normal mage has the potential to help your army more with defensive spells and is a more conventional choice. You really need to decide what you want out of magic and whether a dragon will help your army.
well i have both lol but i prefer the dragon mage on sun dragon ..ye magic doesnt really work well against tomb kings but ur rolling was unlucky wait are u talking about mage or archmage?
With the tomb kings you have to remember that many of their characters and some units are flammable, and with the maneuverability of a dragon it's also pretty easy to get at his hierophant. When facing small forces like that, it's pretty likely that your dragon can charge something, and there not be enough enemies left to kill your mage on top.
Plus, I think the dragon mage model is pretty sharp!
Isn't it against the rules to have two arcane items? I would love for a loophole, but I don't think you can.
3000 points Tyranids
2000 points Blood Angels
1500 point Orks
Hmm... it seems like the dragon mage calls for a more aggressive play. It was quite difficult in that game against tomb kings however, because as Spector pointed out, terror was useless. Also my opponenet was taking a weird list with tons of blocks, so I couldn't charge anything either.
What types of items would you recommend for High mage? Jewel of dusk and annulian crystal seems like the best choice.
And macker I was referring to just a mage. Also loki, I believe the ring of fury is an enchanted item so it's okay
Oh yeah... in that game I also took a prince with helm of fortune, star lance, guardian phoenix, dragon armour, shield and barded horse in a dragon prince unit... While he was nigh unkillable, he didn't do much... Which is normally better? Archmage or prince?
i like the prince more i think an archmage is not worth the points
As a bit of a more defensive player and a committed High magic user i would suggest (arch)mages.
The High magic list deadlier then ever and drain magic can cause so much damage to you're opponents magic phase.
Even so if you plan on using lore of fire you are best off with a dragon mage.Their special abilities and several items to further increase their potential (guarding phoenix, gem of sunfire) they work beautifully.
Hope it helps
