I'm building my first army. I'm gonna have one or two units of archers in my 2000 point army. However I don't like the current High Elf archer models. MY plan is to get a box of Spearmen and give them Archer arms and quivers. This means my Archers will have light armor on.
My question is: In game play terms, is it worth the one point per model to give archers light armor? I don't intend for my archers to be in close combat, of course (where a 6+ sv hardly comes into play anyway) but I guess the armor could be some use against enemy bow fire.
What do you folks think?
You're better off spending your points elsewhere to be honest. 6+ armour save is not worth it at all. The 20 points you could be spending on 20 archers with Light armour could go towards better units or simply more archers.
~Agreed. The point per archer may not seem like a lot, but when you start to multiply, then you are coming up with quite a bit of dead points. Our archers are not that good anyways, compared to others, so might as well not spend any more points on them.
Yeah they're really not worth the points..
Also, what legs are you going to give the models? If spearmen legs, no worries, but if archer legs.. It will take a bit of work, for some reason the archer leg-torso is rounded while the spearmen leg-torso is flat, so they aren't as easy as they should be to mix up. They require a bit of filing and GS work. Nothing major, but just thought I should let you know.
I've done the exact same thing, using spearmen legs and it really works great.8Y
Light armour is not worth it's points but you don't have to give them LA in the list.
I've never met a player who has said anything about how they look compared to what they have, so my suggestion is to convert them and play without armour.
5000p. High Elves
The short answer is no.
The long answer would involve me talking about a 6+ save not being worth the points and that a good deal of shooting is S4 or above thus rendering that save useless but of course you don't want to hear that.

Thank you guys for your help.
The consensus seems to be that its a waste of points. I had a feeling that would be the case.
In answer to strewart's question, I intended to use the warrior legs. Basically, I was going to buy a warrior box set (or two), and I have ordered 20 pairs of archer arms on Ebay. I was going to put the warriors together as if they were Sea Guard, but cut off the stowed bow in the quiver and replace it with the sword that comes with each, and then give them archer arms. so the would look very much like my spearmen, except with bows.
I have a while before i get to 2000 points, So I can put a little thought into what I want to do.
an upgrade to a 6+ armour save isnt really an upgrade. You know how hard it can be to get a 6 when rolling an armor save?
Honestly, even the 5+ Armour save isn't that great, especaially since a lot of things (like crossbows or guns or most magic missles are strength 4) rendering the save "worthless" IMHO...
