Hey guys, wanted to run a scenario past you to see how you all would have played the situation.
I was in a knock down drag out brawl with a Vampire Counts army. I was running this army list (2250 High Elf Friendly) and he was running a list with some heavy hitting Blood Knights, Cairn Wraiths, Corpse Carts, Skeletons, Ghouls, and Tomb Guard.
It's end game time. My turn 6, he has yet to take his turn 6. I have destroyed his Tomb Guard, his BSB, his Blood Knights, both blocks of skeletons, and repeatedly tore apart his Ghouls, but they are currently wrecking my archers and bolt throwers. The Spirit Host he summoned using Wind of Undeath (I failed to dispell it by 1!) have my unit of Swordmasters with the banner stuck in combat on their flank (he charged my flank just before I wiped out his last block of skeletons). I have Flaming Sword of Rhuin cast on my Dragon Mage, and I have the flank of his Spirit Host in my sight. His Vampire General is solo, but shielded from a direct charge by his Spirit host. If the game were to be called right now, we determined that it would likely be a Draw.
I figured I had roughly 2 options in regards to the only part of the game that could really change the outcome:
1) Run my Dragon Mage to safety and preserve his Victory Points and likely the Draw
2) Charge the Dragon Mage into the flank of the spirit host hoping to break them with my Dragon Mage's attacks and combat resolution, allowing me to overrun into his general. Hopefully getting either a Minor Victory or a Solid Victory depending on the battle prowess of my Dragon Mage
ok, so, I chose option #2. I'm a player that likes to run numbers in my head, and I figured that if I could take the Spirit Host out, that I could end up taking out his General that very Combat phase.
I ended the game failing this move miserably, and my opponent broke my Dragon Mage during his combat phase by flank charging me with his Cairn Wraiths, and me failing a break check.
However, it wasn't so much combat that failed for me. Not directly at least. I got in combat with the Spirit Host and I had line of sight to his General. I suddenly had a "brilliant" idea, that I figured was a good back-up plan to failing in combat with his Spirit Host. My Dragon Mage had rolled Flaming Sword of Rhuin and Conflagration of Doom as his two spells. So I gave up my Flaming sword, and cast Conflagration on his General with 4 dice (I had 5 in the pool for him to work with, so 7 with his recklessness). I dropped a huge casting value (16) on Conflagration and so he was forced to drop all 5 of his dispell dice, and managed to quash the spell. So I took my 3 remaining dice and I recast Flaming Sword of Rhuin so I could actually hit the Spirit Host. I miscast.... I didn't win combat....
So, what would you have done, and did I make a poor choice, or purely get unlucky?
You lost to a miscast, cant put that down to poor choice. It was bad luck. Good generals will always get stuck in, if youre just going to play a VP denial game it would be pretty dull. It may have cost you the game, but i think you made the right decision, within the spirit of the game.
Think about this, Honestly, if could see the future and knew what would happen, would you have fled? or would you have still made the charge? Basically, shallow victory or honourable defeat at the hands of luck. I think you can see which side I stand, though no doubt tournement players would do the opposite, even in a friendly game lol.
That was my take on it too. It also fit the reckless nature of the Dragon Mage too, though honestly, that was a bit of an afterthought
I'm with you all the way with what you did. I don't know how the rest of the game went for you, what mistakes or mishaps may have occured to get you into that kind of a position. But you did the right thing- never give up a close fight unless it's a tournament. The rest of the time, fight like your life depends on it.
I've had my archers knock down a stegadon in a fight that they should have never won. The game was so close, that those archers were the only combat effective unit that was left, and his end-game was by now, hinging on the stegadon. So- lesson learned, have some faith and give 'em hell.
