i say yes in a 2k battle against dwarves I brought 2 dragon mages 1 prevented 30 thunderers from shotting at the first round the other demolished his artillary turn2
Your opponent had 30 thunderers and one of your mages prevented them from shooting? How?
He should be the primary target for the thunderers and be dead around turn 1 or 2.
Anyway, to the point.
I find dragons are great as long as you know how to use them, and you're not facing a gunline. Dragon mages can cast devastating spells with their special rule, as well as daring a co charge and rely on getting of flaming sword, but either than that he's pretty vulnerable, and thus I would rarely use him unless in small points battles as a real morale crusher or in conjunction with another mage.
The lord on dragon I find very useful in battles of 2000+ (obvious) as he can pack a punch in melee as well as provide shooting depending on how you equip him.
To sum up, dragons are worth it if you give them some help in way of magic or other units that co operate with them. If you don't have these, your dragon is doomed, mark my words.
5000p. High Elves
I "saw" a 2K game where a Chaos Lord on a Dragon shredded a Slann Mage Lord's army. If correctly used based on their special rules and ridiculous statline, they should most definately be worth it.
I echo the above post. I'd like to know how you prevented a magically-resistant Dwarf force from shooting AND destroyed their cannons within 2 turns. The Lores of Life and Metal are very nice though, so that is possibly how you managed it.
Finally, I plea with you to type your sentences properly. I had to read that post three times to make head or tail of it.
Did you make all the Dwarven gunpowder a little wet perchance?
2 Dragon Mages = all 4 hero slots in 2k points.
Dragon Mages can only take Lore of Fire, and can only be level 2. Unless Terror/bad rolls/2nd turn charge/break killed them, then I really doubt it was done by turn two, especially with cannons.
Err did you consider that his dragon mage could swoop into combat?
And I'm guessing that he made the thunderers panick (unless we have some awesome magic item I havent found yet) a burst of flame ir just sent them packing by being within 6 inches of them.
Unless he landed the dragon on thier flanks so they turned around to face dragon (I'm not sure why he would do this though.)
. "Stop complaining ponce and hit stuff with yer shiny new axe"
I attacked thier flank stopping them from shooting while the rest of my army decimated thiers with the help of the other dragon but I have to addmit I was lucky anyway I was THinking that you could 35 spearmen or 22 white lions for the price of a dragon mage
Dragon Mages are the "brute attack" of a magic list- they add PowerDice, and they can cast dangerous magic. Any 'magic heavy' list should include a L2 Dragon Mage with a Silver Wand. That's +5 PD/turn.
I never use dragon lords in less than 3K battles though. I agree that dragons can be extremely deadly, but they are also fragile thanks to the elves riding them, and therefor you are sinking alot of points into 1 basket. I also never make my dragon-rider the general if i don't have to. That way he is "expendable" for killing Daemons, or stopping up big units.
Best use of dragon- Landed a Dragon Mage in a densely packed formation of Nightgoblins. He Flamed one, and Ring of Fury'd it. Then he charged a unit of them, and broke it in combat. This, mixed with the terror tests around him, caused the entire formation of Goblins to fall back through their own ranks and make an expedititious retreat from the table. The Dragon Mage was then blasted away by DoW Crossbowmen though.
you might be in trouble if there ends up being a fanatic or two
so do grey knights, cuz they're basically swordmasters in space.
This is very true- i guess it would be fair to say that I (unfairly) knew my opponent, and that his model collection did not include Fanatics at the time. However, a Fanatic really can ruin a dragon's day.
And a word of warning: Carnosaurs from the LM list are certified, GW-intended, DragonKillers. They are able to tear-up any of our dragons. We held a pit-fight in my club, where you built a character and monster, and duked it out, and the damn Carnosaur ate everything it came in contact with.
