So ive recently started fantasy after playing 40k for about 3 years, but my questions are related to high elves since this is the army I chose. My first question is I have about 20-30 Sword masters (LOVE EM!!!) and I was wondering if I place then in ranks of 2 by 5 then do they only get 5 hits or is it 10? and same goes with my archers, can I fire in two+ ranks or just in one. Also im setting up my army and it usually consists of two units of 10 sm, one unit of archers, two lvl 2 mages, and 2 units of 5 shadow warriors and maybe a RBT, for 1k pts. Now im going to be playing 2k soon so im wondering whats a good list for me to try, I will be facing/playing with these armies.
So my question being what is the best route to take. Thanks!
ps. also as a lvl 2 mage my mages only can use 3 power dice correct?
Well in WHFB the whole unit doesn't generally get to attack unlike in 40k, except for skirmishers. Only the front rank in combat (more for spears) get to attack, but with Swordmasters in 2x5 you will get 10 attacks because they have 2 each... Archers can only shoot in one rank, unless on a hill. And yes, a level 2 mage can use up to 3 dice.
As to army composition, there are good and bad unit sizes and item choices, beyond that it is up to what style of list you want to play. 4 levels of magic in 1k is a lot, you want to go magic heavy? Look around at other people's lists, and some of the threads in the HE forum, tacticas and such, and determine what kind of list you want, then try to make one and put it in the army list forum, people will advise you from there to help optimize it.
As for help with the HEs army, I might be facing them tomorrow (them or Dwarfs, depending on what my opponent decides to bring out), so Friday would be a better time for my advice, but I'll give it go now. From what I know, HEs rely quite heavily on their elite infantry to win. I'd say take at least 2-3 units at 2K points. Dragon Princes are also nice. Spearmen are also nice, especially with a BSB. The other advice I have to give is to make up a list, and post it in the Army Lists forum.
~For High Elves, play to our strengths. Our elite infantry can rip through literally everything. My preferred unit is a good troupe of White Lions with a Warbanner and Amulet of Light. At 365 points it's a big dip, but they can usually tear apart the front row so not many will get to attack back, and they get a 3+ save against shooting.
~Magic is another stomping point. You can shut down the enemy phase and destroy your opponent with devastating mages. If you do go heavy magic, then a Banner of Sorcery is a good investment.
