Do you think with the new codex out, The dark elves are more than a match for the High elves?
The Dark magic section in particular is a good example, Power of darkness gives you extra power dice. That negated Drain magic there.
I HATE DARK ELVES MORE THAN ALITH ANAR they destroyed my magic my shooting damn assassins and they then decided to shoot me to hell and finish me off with a hydra and a charge from cold one knights I was left with 3 white lions out of a unit of 20 the second time Was my fault by charging with a dragon mage and a unit of 20 silver helms and 20 white lions and 15 spearelves and some other crappy stuff in 1500 points so yes they are more than a match and thier hatred against high elves unless you have 50 shadow warriors you are in trouble my tactics would be stay in the woods with 50 shadow warriors get 4 mages a dragon and some bolt throwers protected by 2 nobels and mabye some archers and great eagles cast drain magic 7 times and don't do cc then you have a chance
The new DE book is an interesting one. It can be very balanced, and even slightly underpowered in parts, yet other parts are extremely powerful. It really depends on the list you face, what your opponent has taken. Black Guard are pretty awesome (especially compared to our elites), while executioners aren't that great. And the Hydra is grossly underpriced for its abilities. I know its not a good idea to compare two different armies together, but hell look at the 'scary' and quite tough Varghulf for VC, and realise it is absolutely nowhere near as good as the Hydra and costs the same points.
I have faced the new DE once with my HE and it was a very close and good game right up until the end, when he got ahead and beat me fairly easily. The list I faced was pretty well balanced, didn't have a Hydra or too much magic, so it wasn't particularly overpowered. The only thing I thought was a bit rough was the assassin. I10 and ASF?!? That thing can pretty much pop out and instantly kill any character with no chance at all for you to stop it. VC and TK would be in very big trouble with their crumble, as would magic heavy armies. When it first appeared, it killed my BSB and thus made my spearmen lose combat and run, then moved on and killed a mage.
So some parts of a DE army is a bit overpowered, and other parts are a bit underpowered. They will go really well in tournaments, but in friendly games should be just a bit above average.
I'm glad to see GW is back to making upgraded, strong but balanced army books. Yes there are some things that can be abused, but I see potential abuse in all the books. VC and Demons were almost written to be abused in certain sections. I see no reason why He vs DE shouldn't be a decent game coming down to generalship, deployment and who can roll dice better.
The new dark elves are perfectly beatable with High elves, whilst some of their options are fairly powerful the only thing that struck me as broken was the reverse ward save item which makes the lord invincible. We also have a better bonus vs them than they do vs us, they get hatred already so hating us every round isnt that big of a deal when we get reroll all psychology which is far better.
