I have played against dark elves 3 times and I was always massacred I have tried most things but I'm not getting any where. At 2000 points I need help they always have 1 hydra and 2 bolt throwers 3 units of crossbows and 1 unit of five cold one riders plus more other units and their magic seems unbeatable I need HELP
Have you tried taking a Star Dragon? There seems to be nothing in the army that is particulalry scray. CoK are a nasty proposition, but our cavalry is better - they charge further than CoK, and Dragon princes seem to be better than them in combat. Phoneix Guard are nice, to take apart their units through Fear alone, and their 4+ ward save makes them pretty tough against most things. Add in sacred incense (Dark Elf shooting is BS based, so is affected) on the unit, and then you have a unit that can take a disproportionate quantity of fire from enemy ballistics, and still remain pretty unscathed.
Against magic, you can go uber-defensive - take the trickster's pendant as then they will have a serious problem with any miscasts. Take a banner of arcane protection on those units that you MUSt protect, and scroll caddy the otehr phases. Vortex shard is a great item as it basically breaks an entire phase, which is a nasty thing for Dark Elves given that they pay a premium on the rest of teh army to have such a powerful magical offense.
If you want to be nasty, and your opponent plays an uber cheesy army, then take Teclis.
Against the Hydras - Star Dragon, as I said, and your own bolt throwers should deal with it. The breath weapon isn't so scary for your characters etc. as long as you have them equipped with Dragon Armour.
Deep blocks of spear elves will hold off most of the Dark Elf army, as they have "Elven" syndrome of T3 across the board - you have a 2 rank ASF on the charge, 3 ranks ASF on the defensive.
But really, you should not need to spend 2 hero choices and 5-600 points on a dragon to take out a 175 point monster.. The Hydra is pretty rediculous for its points. Lore of fire could be useful, or just flames of the phoenix, to get rid of its regeneration.Against the Hydras - Star Dragon, as I said
Don't underestimate Cold One Knights, they get s4 now which makes them really good even when they aren't charging. Plus they cause fear. And DE chariots are really tough and hit pretty hard now. Phoenix Guard are very good, they can beat most units with their s4 and if you take a large unit and outnumber them, they're gone. And eagles take out their bolt throwers, or you could use archers to shoot them. They don't have a great chance, but over 2 turns should be able to bring one down. Or even your bolt throwers if you run out of other targets.
