Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hey all ,
It's my first post after a few weeks of browsing the forums - so please be gentle
I'l get straight to the point without much ado , i intend on rejoining the ranks of GW hobbyists after a 10yr absense and was given some High Elf minatures as a gift , i intend on picking up the current army book tomorrow but i have a very clear idea of what i would like to field already , i think a force of around 1000 to 1500pts would suit me fine , mainly consisting of SM , a unit of archers , RBP , and some SW,
But with these i was thinking of using 2 units of 5 DPs - now wilst scouring through the box of elfy bits , i came across a unit of 8 silverhelms (all minatures unpainted) i was wondering is it possible to convert my SH to DP? if there are any ideas people had on doing this ie: with what parts , and how id go about it?
Any suggestions welcome , except maybe those that suggest purchasing such expensive models !
Thanks in advance
Firstly- welcome to the forums. And you did the right thing by choosing to play High Elves haha.
As to your Silver Helm quandry- this issue has been discussed elsewhere on these boards, you could probably have used the search feature. But, since you are new i guess i could help you here.
You need to take a look at some DP models. You will notice that they are somewhat smaller, as they are metal. There are also some notable differences berween each piece:
Horse body: lower body is the same, but the head features plate-armor doing down the back of the neck
Rider legs: the rider's legs are quite similar, so there shouldn't be any troubles there.
Rider Torso: the DP torso is made of plate mail, with 2 layers over his stomach. The SH's armor is a single-sculpted piece of plate (like Batman's chest).
Rider Arms: a dragon prince has his shoulder armor, like epaulets. However, he has a second plate underneath this, and then -like the SH- his arms have a sleave of mail, and then some cloth.
Rider Lance and Shield: dragon princes have dragon-edged shields usually. It's a blank, detailless field, and then the rim of it has the curving dragon affixed. The lance has a dragon moving up from the gaurd, down over the counter balance, and about 1/4 the way up the lance.
Rider Helm: The most iconic part of the Dragon Prince is the appearance of their helms. The DP helm features a dragon's neck and head on the front, and the two wings along the side. The crest of the helm is topped with two shoulder-length streamers. Silver Helms wear unardorned helmets.
So, keeping all of that in mind, you'll need to find a way to represent atleast the helm on the Dragon Prince, which happens to be the most difficult part. Greenstuff is my weapon of choice for this job, and even then- it's not as good looking as the metal models. I have had success with the torso and horse's neck pieces. That's just as simple as thin bands of greenstuff with some trimming. Same goes for the lance, it's just detail work, still not as nice as the original though. To our knowledge, there are no bitz that could be swapped over. It's been proposed that perhaps dark-elf Cold One knights or Corsairs could lend suitable flavor, but without any way to order individual sprues, this would be almost as pricey as the actual DPs.
Thank you very much for the reply , i have chosen to avoid using DPs in general , as use of green stuff to the degree i needed is way out of my current ability range - il have to get them for a birthday or somthin - make someone else pay!!
There are a few little dragon pieces, notably on the spearmen sprue as a banner top. Maybe one of the helms/shields from the noble plastic box if you wanted to make your heroes a little more bland. I think you don't really need to make them look exactly like DP, just significantly different from SH that there is no confusion. I have a pretty big bits box so I am looking to sprues from other armies for dragony stuff to do mine. Maybe see if other people have spare parts they might trade. To my knowledge no one has found an easy and effective way to do it yet though.
I have a picture of my own effort at converting but this failed miserably. I roughly followed strewart's method. I'll see if I can dig it up.
