Simple question: Which is best?
All same points, so it would be great to hear from you!
They are all different so it depends on what you want or what you need to complete your army.
Swordmasters are the Hardest Hitting but weak to missile fire
White Lions are Hard Hitting more resilient to missiles and are good at flushing out terrain
Phoenix Guard Will are great stayers which hit harder than the average troop.
I have a unit of each, but fluff wise i like the swordmasters, the idea of swinging great weapons with the ASF rule made me happy i did HE.
I voted Swordmasters....not because I necessarily think they are the "best" tactical choice..... but because I love them.
I fell in love with SM's back in my youth...when they knocked arrows aside with their swords....amazing lol
Utility wise I kind of think that PG might have the greatest all around use of survivability, damage, and tertiary effect.
Erm - sin't there a very similar poll going on below?
This should almost be made a sticky since the question has come up in polls and threads many times...
There is no real 'best', much of it is personal opinion. As far as all round most useful, it really is White Lions. Not only do they have the highest strength, they get protection from missile fire, can move through woods without penalty (which is great), AND are stubborn so won't be running away too quickly. Their benefits are worth more than the benefits of the other two units.
Of course, if you don't care about protection and just want walking chainsaws, swordmasters do the combat job best. They are very prone to missile fire though.
Phoenix Guard (IMO) have the best models of the three by far, and the coolest fluff. They are also very resilient with their ward saves and s4 really isn't that bad against most troops. They can kill a couple then absorb damage easily. Combine that with their fear and they have great potential to rout enemy units easily.
See Strewarts Post for why, the other's have their place though as Strewart said.
WL: I can kill, I die but don't run
PG: I don't kill but I don't die and you fear me
SM: I can slaughter, but I die in droves when you glance my way
edit: in terms of looks I like them equally,
SM can look great when well done but aren't that dynamic
WL reasonably dynamic
PG Pretty cool with all their armour, but pretty static

Strewart got it pretty much right. The best out of the 3 is really a matter of opinion, but the White Lions are definately the most versatile, since they can cause a lot of damage, but are fairly survivable too. For Swordmasters and Phoenix Guard to be really effective you will usually have to support them (Swordmasters need protection from missile fire, and Phoenix Guard need a character or a supporting unit to add kills), but White Lions can do it all reasonably well on their own.
Thou shalt remember:
Warhammer Fantasy armies do NOT have Codices. They have Army Books.

Strewart and Ancalagon are correct. They all three have their advantages, there is no "best", which is why they all cost the same- they're all interchangeable! However, if you are playing poorhammer, buy PGs. They are the best all-rounders.
Swordmaster: excellent against hordes, and non-shooty armor
White Lion: excellent against the hardest of enemies, and shooty armies
Phoenix Gaurd: not quite S5, but with a 4+ ward, Fear, and +1S makes them golden
Just remember, PGs are only "mediocre". They aren't the best at anything (except surviving, they do that well), but they are competent at all the facets.
And nobody needs to sticky this. There's a tactica that covers all of this in the appropriate section.
1. I like the Phoenix Guard as a "core" unit for a force, just for there rules alone.
2. Swordmasters make a nice "flank" unit for your Phoenix Guard "core"
3. White Lions are good against "skirmisher" forces, and against forces with lots of missile troops. My favorite tactic is to use them for killing WM crews, small missile units, lone characters, etc., since they can move through woods.
A "all chrace" force is an idea I have been entertaining for quite some time now.
