Has anyone converted reavers out of silver helms and chariot horses? If so, any pics?
I am having trouble fitting the legs on the horses. There is the rope from the chariot kit attached to the horses neck, which is pretty much impossible to remove, and it interferes with the rider. There is also the little tab thing on the front of silver helms legs which I think is supposed to be part of their saddle, which I can cut off without trouble. The main concern is what to do with the rope on the horses? It would be hard to make it look like the riders are holding it, and either way it would have to be cut back so the legs actually fit.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
~I don't know about you, but I plan on buying a box of Glade Riders, and bits from the war store. I'll be using the heads of HE archers, and the torsos and speararms of HE spearmen. Other arms will use bow arms from the glade riders. I'll also use green stuff to high elf-up the legs. I'm using the double feathers from the spearmen box on the horse heads as well.
I was going to buy glade riders... Their legs are very leafy though. And I figured I had enough spare archer bodies and arms, spear arms and various heads to make them without having to buy an extra $50 box. So I am using chariot horses, helm legs, archer bodies, mostly spear arms with maybe one or two archer arms just for looks (my reavers don't get bows in my lists) and archer or spear heads. Don't have to buy anything extra but do have to figure out what to do about the ropes.
Also, I like the chariot horses more than the glade rider horses. The WE ones have leaves on them while the chariot ones have HE stuff on them.
i acutally used for my reaver knight conversions;
- the horse & legs from the reaver blister
- figh elf spearmen torsos. (the 3 w/decoration on them) + 1 or 2 archer torsos
- spearmen arms. (used the spear being held out to the side of the body + a couple of the 'couched' ones normally used for the standard bearer)
- heads were taken from the new dark elf corsairs! (used the helmeted heads w/generic spiky adornment)
- for the musician, i used the helmeted head from the bolt thrower kit and added the 'spiky' bit to the helmet. his torso is an archer torso + champion longbow arm + archer musician arm. i sniped the hawkhead just above the bottom 'ring' and then replaced it with the unicorn horn from the silverhelms musician arm.
- for the horses, i used the basic unarmoured horse body and then added spare armoured elf horse heads from my dragon princes.
overall the unit has a slightly darker feel to it as i'm building an army principally from nagarythe!
if i can figure out my digi cam, i'll try and upload some photos of the unit!
That sounds like quite an expensive way to go, however Strewart, you can do soemthing similar - use the Corsair kit combined with the Silver Helms kit and the steeps from the High Elf "old" or perhaps the new chariots....
Swap out the Silver helms legs for Corsair torso, and use the corsair helmets and heads, adding in the arms from spare spear Elves and archers..
Here's my recipe. I should probably take pictures cause I think they turned out well
WhiteLion/Tiranoc Chariot horses
Silver Helm Champion legs (got them in bits for $2) need slight modification underneath
Silver Helm torso
Bare heads (spearman champ, RBT, archer, DE, custom all come with heads without helmets)
spears from spearmen
quivers from spearmen or archers box
My problem with the corsair heads is the hair is blowing the wrong way, even for the corsairs.
My problem with the Glade riders is that they are much smaller than the HE stuff, they don't match up.
Some of these methods sound expensive, which is one of the reasons I haven't really thought about trying it. I think whatever method you use will end up cannibalising several different kits. I do like the Tiranoc horses, and I think they will make for good reavers as long as the riders look the part.
Thou shalt remember:
Warhammer Fantasy armies do NOT have Codices. They have Army Books.

my conversion didn't turn out to be all that expensive. Yes I did purchase a Lion chariot kit, but if you're using the chariot as a lion chariot, then you do have several pieces leftover. The spearmen sprues come with extra spears, all the sprues come with the extra heads. Silver Helm body bits are super cheap and if you buy a battalion you're essentially get most of the silver helms for free (due to the price reduction and the fact that you get 8 SH instead of 5-6 like the new sets)
If I already had 1 chariot and spearmen or archer units, I would expect to pay somewhere in the neighborhood of $25usd max for 5 converted reavers, which is cheaper than anything you could buy and look much better than the GW blister reavers.
All well and good, but I already have the pieces I am going to use and I'm not interested in buying more bits when I have stuff that I'm happy with. I just need to figure out what to do with the ropes on the horses to convert them and make them look decent.
In my case, the cost is pretty much nothing. I bought the big army box when HE first got rereleased, so I had 24 archers (10 or so got turned into seaguard) which I wouldn't need for anything, and 8 silver helms which are now useless (already have 8 assambled). Yes it means I am wasting the rest of the helm kit, but I don't care, I need reavers not helms and they are the mounted legs I have available to me. And I have 4 of the new chariots, so with my spare lions I traded them to someone I know who is doing a Chrace army for the extra horses I needed.
