After learning Tyrion has a 0+ armour save for purposes of strength modifiers (meaning he still fails on a 1 but even with a S5 hit he still gets a 2+) I'm pondering Tyrion's role in an army. I think he makes an excellent (and perhaps the best) character killer. Like the bretonnians, how they can kit out a lord or paladin to take out characters and monsters, Tyrion is the best model for that. In a game I had against Dark Elves, Tryion alone, no help whatsoever faced down Malekith on his dragon. Granted it was close and Tyrion lost his armor and sword. He still managed to kill Malekith AND the Dragon. This is the basis for my theory that Tyrion is the best model for killing characters.
Yeah, GW haven't really gone very lightly on Special Characters in the newer books. Take a look at the new WoC, and you'll see what I mean.
Have a few more games with Tyrion, and see if you make the same observations. After all, it seems like a big statement to make after only one game.
I have seen the new WoC book. Anyways, Tyrion I believe is excellent for challenges and plain old character killing.
He is also extremely good at creature killing - again, a 0+ armour save, with a S7 flaming attack means he is great at delivering the coup de grace to Treemen, Hydras etc, and is also very nasty against any Greater Demon that has had a couple of wounds taken off, except the Bloodthirster with Obsidian armour.
With a 4+ ward and a 4+ regeneration, he only takes wounds that ignore armour 25% of the time, so even S10 attacks might not wound kill him.
With ASF, I10, Tyrion should be able kill enough enemies to remove the close combat threat of killing-blow by man-sized enemies. And if he feels trheatened, he can always "sunfang" them...
Larger targets such as Manticores and BT will have to be dealt with accordingly, but they still have to hit him, and WS10 means hitting on at least 4s.
Whenever I use Tyrion I like to just use him by himself and go character/war machine/flank hunting. I don't really like to have him in units because you loose his 20" movement and you can still loose to combat res. Tyrion will wreck gun lines, and with his saves I don't even care if hes taking 40+ shots at short range. I ran down a unit of Lead Belchers once with him and ended up right in front of 48 knoblars and only managed to take one wound from 96 shots lol.
I must admit that I am surprised that it was even close between Tyrion and Malekith. In the past it was the charger won. Now if it came to combat Malekith would be lucky to survive a round, he has no save at all against Tyrion who is hitting on 3's (I think) and wounding on 2's. If Tyrion fails to kill him in a round then he is probably in trouble though since without Runefang he will probably struggle to hurt the Witchking at all. Then without his armour the dragon will probably kill him in short order.
Anyway, yes Tyrion is quite a beast nowadays.
what i wonder though since we are talking about the dude anyway.
How many of you use the special flame attack of sunfang?
Most people i know just use his massive charge range to get in fast and then let him start tearing the opponents army apart.
Just wondering here.
